Sheets Become Decor
By Theresa A. Turner
Asst. Home Ec.
Ext. Agent
Sheets no longer serve
just a utilitarian function. In
recent years, they have
become an integral part of
beckoom decor! Keep them
bright and new-looking by
exercising care in making
beds, reifeiring rips and
tears promptly and laun
dering frequently.
Always loosen sheets all
around from under the
mattress before taking them
from beds. Never yank than
off nor pull sheets from
other bedding. A perfectly
serviceable sheet may tear
with such treatment.
Protect sheets from
abraison against a mat
tress, and the mattress it
self, with a mattress pad,
which covers the Entire top
surface of the mattress.
The time to mend jmy
ripped or torn sheets is as
soon as they are removed
from beds and before
laundering, suggests The
Soap and Detergent
Association.
It’s important to change
bed linens often since body
oils can build up and become
more difficult to remove in
laundering. Encourage the
family to shower or bathe
before bed. Distaff mem
bers should wash makeup
off before retiring. Such
measures help prevent
staining that may require
special methods of removal.
Any stains or spots that do
occur should be removed
before laundering. Treat
according to type of stain.
Sort sheets with pieces of
similar weight, amount of
soil and fabric content.

Wash whites with whites
and colors with colors. Load
the washer loosely and mix
sheets with smaller items,
for best cleaning and good
circulation. A sufficient
amount of detergent and
water that is hot enough are
key ingredients in removing
body oils. They also help to
eliminate yellowing caused
by an accumulation of oils
over a period of time. Bear
in mind that graying and
yellowing are most -often
caused by soil and oils
embedded in fibers through
underuse of the washing
product.
Most of today’s bed linens
are permanent press,
generally a blend of
polyester and cotton. They
can be machine dried with
wrinkle-free results, if in
structions for drying time
are followed and sheets
removed from the dryer as
soon as the appliance stops.
Stack freshly laundered
sheets on the bottom of the
pile in a linen closet. In this
way, they can be rotated in
use to insure even wear.
Incidentally, the same
suggestions and precautions
apply to protecting
pillowcases.
