Thursday, December 1, 1977 Swain School Projects Goal “Setting and maintaining xW 1 academic standards for students is the ultimate of the administrative and teaching staff at Ernest A. Swain Elementary School, affirmed Gil Un derwood, Principal, as he referred to a positive plan for recognizing students who make good grades. “Placing stricter emphasis on higher academic achievement has also met with favorable approval from parents,” added Underwood, who is serving his first year as Swain principal. Only eight out of 380 students at E.A. Swain School made the “A” Honor Roll during the last six weeks grading period. To be on the “A” list, students must maintain a 93-100 average in each subject, and 1 BFy. Swain students reaching this goal during the fast grading period included Susan Elks, Jimmy Harris, Terry Johnson, Jennifer' Ledford, Ben Rinehart, Matthew Sopher, Karen Stalls, and Sheila Wiley. Being “Principal For a Day” is the method chosen by Swain students to honor all students who make the “A” Honor Roll in each six weeks grading period. Other options included longer physical education, lunch, or break periods. As “principal,” each honoree serves in the capacity of principal for one hour. Their responsibilities include running errands, receiving telephone calls, conducting fire drills, talking with parents, observing classes, and signing students in and out of school. “With teachers placing increased emphasis on achievement, getting the “A” really means that the student has performed “A” work,” Underwood stated. He further added that he felt more students will be on the “A” Honor Roll at the end of the second grading period, which ended November 23rd. “Teachers have in dicated that a number of students have really been working hard to pull up their grades and to keep the good grades previously made,” noted Mr. Underwood. Report cards will be sent home on December 6th. Jones-White Vows Said $475,000 Grant Continued From-Page 3 chapel train were flounced at the hemline and ap pliqued with beaded lace.
