Harless, Jr., and daughter Katherine and Martha Scott attended the Big Four Basketball tournament held last weekend in Greensboro, N.C. Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Carr spent last week in Raleigh attending the various meetings of the Historic Preservation Society of N.C., and the N.C. Literary and Historical Association. Mrs. Edward G. Bond and son Gris Bond attended the 3A State High School foot ball championship game held in Greensboro last Friday night. Among those attending the Presentation of the Cannon Cup to Miss Elizabeth Moore at the Archives and History Building in Raleigh Thurs day, December Ist were the following; Mrs. Rebecca Warren of Chapel Hill, Rev. F.B. Drane of Edenton, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Pruden of Chapel Hill, Miss Ava Garrett of Edenton, Mrs. Carter Rowe, sister of Miss Moore of Boston, John Rowe, Boston, Miss Moore’s brother, Mr. and Mrs. John Moore of Rocky Mount, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Parsley, Rocky Mount, Mrs. Charles Silver of Raleigh, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Carr and Mr. and Mrs. Ross Inglis of Edenton. Prior to the presentation they attended a cocktail party held at the Museum of History featuring 200 years of N.C. furniture which included several fine Edenton pieces. After the presentation Miss Moore and her family joined the members of the Presentation Society at a Formal Dinner held in the Governor’s Mansion. Mrs. Ross Irigfis and daughter Susan attended the 40th Annual N.C. Artist Show in Raleigh, November 30th. Mrs. Inglis also at tended the Annual Board Meeting of Roanoke Island Historical Society in Manteo last Tuesday. Mrs. C.A. Phillips at tended The State Art Society Annual meeting held in Raleigh last week. —O— Observance Set Hie children of Mr. and Mrs. Roy S. Chappell, Sr., will honor their parents December 18 on their 50th wedding anniversary. The celebration will be at 109 West Railroad Avenue in Hertford. Guests are asked to call between 3 P.M. and 6 P.M. It is requested that no gifts be given. 50TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY—Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Stillman Leary of the Rocky Hock Community celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary with a reception at their home on November 20. The occasion was hosted by their children: Tommy and Jack Leary of Edenton; Rev. Bill Leary of Wilson; Mrs. Julia Small of Edenton; Mrs. Ruth Clark of Durham; and Mrs. Emily Nock of Swanton, Md. The Learys have 13 grandchildren. ~ M. 4«i»< Daisy N. Bembry Group Honors Mrs. Bembry Daisy N. Bembry, home economics teacher at Chowan High School, has been recognized as Regional Home Economics Teacher of the Year by the North eastern Regional Home Economics Association. The organization represents 15 counties. The Home Economics Teacher of the Year Award is based on an innovative program implemented during the year. Her subject was family life education in the area of foods and nutrition. Due to the rising cost of food, limited variety of tasting experiences, lack of student knowledge of food, Mrs. Bembry developed a project that inspired students. Parents were involved in making comments on students home projects. They also took part in saving food cartons, bottles, bags for consumer study in class. As a result of the project parents and other family members were able to share food cooked at home by the students. Hie project helped promote consumer awareness and wise selection in the market [dace. Her co-workers have said, “Her personal and professional qualities have endeared her to all persons, both young and old, with whom she has contact.” Professionally, she has served as president of Northeastern Regional Home Economics, and chairman of the Mem bership Committee. Currently, she is second vice president of the Chowan County Extension Homemakers Association and is a member of Paradise Road Extension Homemakers Club. She was vice president and on many committees in the North eastern District Association of Extension Home Economists. She has been a teacher at Chowan High School since 1974. Prior to that time she was Home Economics Extension Agent in Chowan County and has held teaching positions in Nash, Perquimans, and Beaufort counties. She is a graduate of Shaw University in Raleigh. She and her husband, Robert, reside on Paradise Road. She is a member of Providence Baptist Church. Baptist Topic Announced Dr. Robert E. Gray, pastor of Edenton Baptist Church, has chosen as his sermon subject at the 11 o’clock morning worship the topic “His Name? Mighty God.” Scripture will be taken from Isaish 9: 2-7 and Matthew 16: 15-16. Special music at the morning service will be a solo, “I Wonder as I Wan der” by Gerald Hamilton, Tenor, and the anthem, “Go Tell It on The Mountain” by the Youth Choirs, with Jeff Babb as soloist. The combined Youth Choirs of the church will present a Christmas can tata, “Love Came Down.” on Sunday afternoon. Beginning at five o’clock, the service will be under the direction of Gerald Hamilton. (There will not be a 7:30 evening worship.) Meeting Held Twenty-three members were present Tuesday for, the Garden of Eden Club meeting at the home of Mrs. Edward G. Bond. Each member brought a plant to exchange. Club members have decorated the Cupola House for the Wassail Party. Christmas wreaths were placed on the doors of the Iredell House, Cupola House and courthouse. METHODIST TOPIC “Seeing Is Believing” is the topic chosen by Rev. Richard L. Blankenhom for his II A.M. sermon Sunday at Edenton United Methodist Church. Miss Perry Is FFA Sweetheart Poise, beauty, charm, the ability to speak well and talent were the main criteria for judges to ob serve in selecting a winner for the 1977-78 FFA Sweetheart Pageant at Chowan High School on November 30. Melanie Perry, a Chowan High junior excelled in these areas and was crowned FFA Sweetheart by Debbie Davenport, the 1976-77 winner. Karen Evans, Recreation Scoreboard Women’s volleyball season ended last week with Edenton Savings & Loan winning the double elimination tournament. Edenton Savings & Loan defeated a strong Peoples Bank team for the cham pionship by a score of 14-16, 15-10, 15-10. Twiddy’s In surance was voted by the teams to receive the Sportsmanship Award. An organizational meeting for women’s basketball will be held Wednesday, Dec. 14 at 7:00 P.M. in the Edenton National Guard Armory. Other than the winners, con testants in the Sweetheart Court were Dianne Weiss, Barbara Forehand, Lisa Ashley, and Krista Hare. After presenting the 1977-78 Sweetheart a bouquet of American Beauty roses, Kenneth Blanchard, FFA president, presented the members of the Court a simple long-stemmed rose. As Chowan High School’s FFA Sweetheart, Melanie will compete for the FFA Federation Sweetheart title RED ROSES - The 1977-78 FFA Sweetheart, Melanie Perry, receives Roses from Kenneth Blanchard, Chowan High School FFA president. Melanie is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Perry. at its next meeting at North eastern High School in Elizabeth City on December 15. There she will be judged on poise, beauty and charm and delivery of her statement on “The Im portance of Vocational Agriculture and the FFA.” Also during the federation meeting, Bruce Blanchard will alter the Creed com petition; Billy Ullom, Tracy Miller, Andy Hare, Vandy Parks, Keith Bunch and Michael Hollowell will enter the Parliamentary Procedure competition, and Steve Evans, Robert Stallings, Wade Belch and Russell Blanchard, the Quartet contest.
