Page 8-B State Signs Health Contract The State of North Carolina officially renewed its health benefits coverage Friday with the signing of an SBO-million contract with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina. State Treasurer Harlan E. Boyles and Plan President Thomas A. Rose signed the document at a ceremony at the Treasurer’s office in Raleigh. The contract, the largest ever underwritten by the plan, provides health benefits for approximately 420,000 North Carolinians, including active and retired school teachers and state employees, their depen dents. and current and former state legislators and their surviving spouses. The Board of Trustees of the Teachers and State Employees’ Retirement System approved the continuation of the group contract which becomes effective July 1. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina began administering and underwriting the state employee program on July 1,1972. Since then, the plan has paid over $275-million in health care benefits for state employees. The comprehensive benfits covered by the contract include semi private room and board and other hospital charges for 365 days for each con finement, 100 per cent of usual, customary and reasonable charges for professional fees, and major medical benefits with a maximum of $250,000 per lifetime for each person covered. The state pays the in dividual rate for teachers and state employees. Those who have families may include them in the program by paying the difference in cost between the individual and family coverage. Legislators pay the full cost of their coverage. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina, the state’s oldest and largest health care prepayment plan, covers more than 2.5- million North Carolinians through its underwritten and administered govern ment programs.
