Page 12-B Baptist Hospital Saves Heart Patients WINSTON-SALEM - A computer system which reduces the time necessary to diagnose heart attacks and cither heart praMems is now in use at N.C. Baptist Hospital. The system also can help to evaluate the general condition of a person’s heart. Smaller hospitals, clinics, nursing homes and even industrial sites in North Carolina and portions of South Carolina, Virginia and Tennesse can also utilize the computer system through telephone communication. The system, developed by Roche Medical Electronics Inc., is one of five in the nation. The others are located at Overlook Hospital, Summit, N.J.; Presbyterian Medical Center, Denver, Colo.; Loma Linda Medical Center, Loma Linda, Calif, and Theda Clark Regional Medical Center, Neenah. The process of sending the electrocardiogram to the computer and receiving the diagnosis takes only minutes. “AO of ths computer’s interpretations will need to be verified by a physician,” according to Dr. John H. Edmonds, director of the Heart Station. He an ticipates that 80 per cent of the computer-diagnoses for patients at other health care institutions will be verified By doctors at the originating institutuion. Even with the need for THE CHOWAN HERAIJ) verification, the time required for a physician to diagnose a heart’s electrical problem will be cut in half. Before installation of the computer, the process of taking and evaluating ECGs at Baptist Hospital involved considerable clerical help. As many as 14 hours, might pass from the time the ECG was taken until a report of the final diagnosis was added to the patient’s chart at the bedside. Now, the processing time is greatly reduced and results from an elec trocardiogram are added to a patient’s chart very soon after the ECG is taken. Because the computer gives reasons far making a specific diagnosis, Dr. Edmonds thinks the new ONE MINUTE SPORTS QUIZ 1. Who won the New Orleans Open Golf Tournament? 2. The principal ingredient in the new system is the computer program, which was developed by IBM. and which is, in Dr. Edmonds’ opinion, the best available. But he expects more sophisticated computer programs to be developed which will allow the com puter to store a patient’s earlier electrocardiograms and allow comparison with the most recent ECG. The computer eventually may be able to help determine whether cardiac pacemakers implanted in patients are working properly and to assist in evaluating a person’s heart functions during treadmill testing.
