Page 2-A NO FTTH CAROUNA A % Farm Tips O From Wachovia Bank & Trust Co., N.A. ByDr.J.W. Pou U. S. tobacco exports reached a record value of ssl.7 billion last year, according to Bill Humphries, agricultural information specialist at N. C. State University. Shipments of unmanufactured leaf rose nine per cent in value to sl.l billion. Exports of cigarettes and other manufactured products gained 19 per cent in value and reached $637 million. Duty-paid imports of leaf and leaf products into the United States were up 18 percent to $373 million. This means that the net contribution of tobacco to the U. S. balance of payments position in world trade was $1.36 billion, an all-time high. Leaf tobacco shipments (export weight) rose from 578 million pounds in 1976 to 628.6 million last year. The average value per pound of leaf exports gained 9.4 percent, rising from $1.59 to $1.74. “However, U. S. tobacco imports showed a larger percentage increase in price last year than did U. S. tobacco exports. This indicates that foreign production costs are increasing,” said Dr. Charles R. Pugh, an N. C. State University extension economist. The average value of imports per pound was 87 cents in 1976 and $1.03 last year an increase of 18 percent. Oriental leaf moved at higher prices and there was some rise in the value of scrap tobacco. U. S. tobacco for many years has been of gen erally higher value than average world production. Pugh pointed out that in 1977 the price differential narrowed rather than widened. The U. S. Department of Agriculture said ex ports of unmanufactured tobacco in 1978 are expected to slip somewhat, compared with the relatively high level of 1977. “The short, weather-damaged 1977 flue-cured crop reduced the availability of quality leaf for export ...” the agency said.
