BjjKt ILLUSTRATE STUDY UNlT—These two Third Grade students of Mrs. Renner at White Oak Elementary School work on a display to illustrate a unit being studied in Social Studies. Studies Exciting The students in Mrs. Renner’s third grade class at White Oak Elementary School have been studying an interesting and exciting unit in Social Studies. They have been talking about a family named the Kings who have had to move out west so the father can help build a dam. The students have discussed being pioneers, living in the desert and what it feels like to leave your nice, comfortable com munity to go to a new and different place. himself to be an effective spokesman for individual liberty. He has resisted the large bureaucracies which threaten our freedoms, whether they be in govern ment, business or organized labor unions. Jesse Helms has displayed remarkable integrity by returning unused office funds to the treasury and by fighting for principle without regard for To make this learning more realistic and memorable, Mrs. Renner, Mrs. Evans and the third graders used a sand table and built mountains, dams, hills and roads and brought in toy cars, trucks, horses, Indians, settlers and many more items to make a somewhat realistic desert and mountain area community. Everyone helped and had a great time! We are now ready to find out if the King family will like living in the desert. We hope so! the political consequences. Robert Morgan does not agree with Jesse Helms on every issue. However, unlike John Ingram, Sen. Morgan refuses to mislead the people of North Carolina for political gain. Sincerely, Mrs. Joe M. Hunt, Jr. P.O. Box 1259 Greensboro, N.C. 27402 THE CHOWAN HERALD N. C. Artist To Visit Area On October 21 one of North Carolina’s foremost artists will visit Aboskie. Nature artist, Sallie Middleton of Asheville, will make a guest appearance at a special showing of her original paintings. The public is invited to the exhibit at Dixon Picture and Frame Shop in the Newmarket Shopping Center in Ahoskie. Mrs. Middleton will be present from 2 P.M. to 6 P.M. to greet visitors and personalize her prints. One North Carolina art appraiser described Mrs. Middleton’s work as “magical”...having a unique lifelike quality. Several elements combine to create this characteristic talent, knowledge, dedication, and the challenging art medium of translucent watercolor. Sallie Middleton’s long and close relationship with the natural world certainly contributes. She grew up in the mountains of Western North Carolina, where her father often guided her on tours of the nearby forest. He explained nature as a great fairyland inhabited by tiny mystical creatures, and Sallie would watch for the imaginery creatures he talked about. She explains, “By looking intently and waiting for the creatures to appear, I began to see small items I might have missed, such as seeds, mosses, and lichums. As I grew older, I began to see also the tremendous detail in nature, how vast and how intricate it is.” This meticulous attention to detail is a mark of Sallie Middleton’s art and one of the reasons it takes her months and sometimes seasons to complete a painting. The artist now resides just outside of Asheville, where her home includes a sunlit studio. Because the demand for her art has grown beyond her ability to produce, her originals are now reproduced as high quality prints by Foxfire Fine Arts, Inc., and are available from Dixon Picture and Frame Shop in Ahoskie.
