Social Security And You By Lee Wallio Field Representative People who have business with Social Security can now take care of most everything by telephone. The first week of any month is a bad time to call Social Security, unless the caller has very urgent business. That is the week Social Security and Supplemental Security Income checks are delivered. During that time it is not unusual for all lines to be in use. The best time to call is after mid-month. A person can call Social Security to apply for Social Security or SSI benefits, apply for Medicare, change name or address of record, report a change in marital status, or report stop or start of work, and other events affecting checks. Telephone service is also available to report a lost or stolen check or delayed payment, report a lost or missing Social Security or Medicare card, get help with Medicare forms, arrange for direct deposit of checks, get an estimate of benefits, and request a statement of their earnings records. Before you call, be sure to have all necessary in formation on hand. The Elizabeth City Social Security office is located at THE CHOWAN HERALD 111 Jordan Plaza next to Southgate Mall (phone 338- 2161) and is open 9:00 to 4:30 weekdays. W - Level or gradually in creasing income is a good way to save taxes according to Charles E. Hammond, extension area manage ment-marketing special ist. Farmers who use the cash basis of accounting have a great deal of flexibility in shifting their income and expenses into or out of the Cooler Climate, Better Health Those of us who are responding to energy conservation pleas by keeping home temperatures somewhat lower this winter are likely to stay somewhat healthier than those who continue to overheat their dwellings. The American Medical Association reminds that temperatures in the mid 60’s are healthier than temperatures in the mid 70s. Heating the interior of homes and offices during the winter removes moisture from the air. The higher the temperature, the dryer the air. Air with little moisture aggravates bronchial and other respiratory problems. It contributes to dry throat and nose, coughs, and dry, itchy skin. The respiratory system doesn’t cope well with sudden changes in tem perature. Moving from an overly heated room into outside cold affects the body adversely, causing coughs and respiratory problems. The body adjusts to tem perature changes gradually. There are no major health advantages inherent in keeping inside temperature somewhat lower, but there are minor advantages that will add to comfort and well being during the winter. If the air inside your home is very dry even with reduced temperature levels, you might consider using a humidifier to add moisture. current tax year, but it must be done according to the gpules. > Farmers will normally be ahead to level out the peaks and valleys in taxable in come from year to year. Otherwise in a good year farmers will pay an un necessarily high tax rate on income that could be shifted into a lower income year. Income and expenses should not be shifted unless there is a sound business reason for doing it. Best place to start year end tax planning is with Schedule F of last years tax return. List this years ex penses and income from your records using Schedule F as a guide. Also estimate what will be bought and sold the rest of the year. Compare the totals with last years.
