For And About Women Thursday, December 7, 1978 THE CHOWAN HERALD Chalkdust By Mary Rhea Gardner Magicians pull rabbits out of hats; Chalk pulls Dust out of schools. The main dif ference between the two is that the first is based on illusion and sleight of hand, while with the latter, what you see is what is there. Flourishing his wand, the magician relies on this tool to help accomplish his goal. Those with whom Chalk comes into contact have no such magical instruments to help reach their educational goals. They must rely on dedication, imagination, patience, acquired skills, support, initiative sense of humor, sense of respon sibility, cooperation and sometime, sheer fortitude to attain their goals. No magic wand has been waved to bring the Edenton- Chowan school board to the position it is now in regards to consolidation. Since making its committment to reorganize the school system, this board has worked steadily and deliberately, facing one stumbling block after another, toward accom plishing its goal of providing equal educational op portunity for all students. Following last week’s state law required public hearing, the board adopted a resolution to reorganize the school system, also a formality. Groundwork has been laid and now all is needed is approval of the State Board of Education and that old bug-a-boo, money. No magic wand will produce that either, but the school board’s next step will be discussing the possibility , METHODIST TOPIC ? “The Christmas Package” is the sermon topic chosen by Rev. Richard R. Blankenhom for the 11 A.M. worship service Sunday at Edenton United Methodist Church. The text is Luke 12:2. Baptist Topic Announced Dr. Robert E. Gray, pastor of Edenton Baptist Church, has selected “Spoken To By The Son” as his sermon tope at the 11 o’clock morning service on Sunday. Scriptural text will be Hebrews 1:1-4. The Sanctuary Choir will provide the special music at the service. For the Call to Worship they will sing “0 Come, 0 Come Emmanuel”, and the anthem will be “O Rest in the Lord”. At the 7:30 evening worship, the Christmas program of the Children’s Choirs will be presented. Under the direction of Mrs. Larry McClure, the choirs to sing are The Preschoolers (4 & 5 year olds), Music Makers (grades 1-3), and Yong Musician (grades 4-6). Annette Partin will be pianist. of financial assistance with the county commissioners. Realizing that their chance of re-organization can still meet obstacles, the administration is faced with the reality of planning for the attainment of con solidation by the fall of 1979. To this and a committee of staff members, students, and department heads from each of the two high schools will soon be combined to begin the high degree of advanced academic plan ning needed to establish a Anyone riding by D.F. Miss Jones is the ERA Supporters Meet Some traditions die hard; and it seems that may be the case with the political in volvement of women begun as early as 1774 with the “Edenton Tea Party”. In October, 1774, Penelope Barker’s house was the scene of the well-known tea party. The courageous women of Edenton, unafraid to let their voices be heard staged a protest tea party. In open defiance of the crown, they signed their names to a petition protesting the taxes and commercial limitations imposed on the Colonies by the British Parliament. On November 28,1978, the Penelope Barker House was again the scene for a meeting of women involved in political doings. The mood was not one of protest but rather of strategy and the first district’s North Carolinians United for the Equal Rights Amendment (NCUERA) met to plan a campaign aimed at in forming legislators and the general public of the im portance of ratification of the equal Rights Amend ment.
