They earn about $1,300 while on active duty and a minimum of $643.23 a year for working one weekend a month and two weeks a year with the corps. Young people who join the Marine Corps Reserve up to six months before they graduate from high school can earn money at monthly meetings and still stay in school, becom ing Marine Reservists within 60 days after graduation. * • * Most Americans can get details about the range of programs and opportunities in the Marine Corps Reserve by calling, toll-free, (800) 423-2600. Ha * FFA SWEETHEART A big bouquet of roses presented by Steve Evans, Chowan FFA president, warranted a big smile from Charlene Evans, newly chosen FFA Sweetheart at Chowan High School’s recent FFA Sweetheart Contest. Miss Evans FFA Sweetheart Accepting a bouquet of long stemmed red roses and receiving the traditional Tiara, Charlene Evans be gan her reign as the 1978-79- Chowan High School FFA Sweetheart. The crowning took place recently during Chowan’s formal FFA Sweetheart Contest. Judged on poise, charm, beauty and talent, with the main emphasis being plased on content and delivery of her presentation “The Importance of Vocational Agriculture and the FFA”, Miss Evans, a sophmore, was selected from a field of eight contestants. She exhibited her talent with a piano rendition. As Chowan’s FFA Chapter Sweetheart, Charlene will be eligible to compete for District FFA Sweetheart at a meeting to be held sometime in January. Winners in district competion are entered in state competition in June. The FFA Sweetheart Court is composed of Lisa Ashley, first runner-up, Melgnie *Rerry* retiring 1977- i ffe ; -CT*A sweetheart; Karen Evans, Teresa Blanchard, Sandra Coston, Kathryn White, Barbara Forehand, and Debbie Chappell. Methodist Men Elect Coleman As President George F. Coleman, Jr., has been elected by Edenton United Methodist Church Men’s Club to serve as president for 1979. I Elected to serve also are the following officers: W. Larry Swindell, vice president; Bernard P. Burroughs, treasurer; and • C.B. (Chuck) Smith, Jr., secretary. The new officers were installed during a special service Wednesday night. Sidney M. Albritton, who has served as president for the past two years, was recognized for exceptional leadership and service. He was presented with a past president’s pin. Homes High School,” Dr. Bruce McGraw, principal, welcomed the student body and parents of new mem bers to Holmes’ annual NHS induction ceremony. Dr. McGraw labled membership into the National Honor Society as “the most prestigious and coveted above all other school organizations, in that its requirements span all organizations and in terests.” The 10 surprised and and overjoyed students who recently pledged to uphold the high principles of the National Honor Society are: Liz Wright, Amy Lane, Alease Moore, Steve Maglione, Jim Voigt, Chris Simons, Alan Parker, Jim Chesson, Chris Harmon and Mike Underkofler. To meet the requirements necessary for NHS mem bership, these juniors and seniors have maintained a weighted scholastic average of 89.5, with 50 per cent of their courses being ad vanced; are active in at least two extra-curricular activities; hold an office; and have received written recommendations of en dorsement from Holmes faculty members. Prior to the formal tap ping and torch lighting ceremony, NHS members expanded on the four major elements of scholarship, service, leadership and high moral character which all new inductees must exhibit.
