Page 2A To The Editor... An open letter to Parents, (Responsible Citizens, Concerned Young People of Edenton and Chowan County. This morning I learned that two fine young men with great potential from good Christian homes are in serious trouble. Many of us are upset and our hearts ache for both boys and their parents. We realize that this tragedy or one similar could happen to us; it could happen to you because no child or parent is immune to the influence of today’s environment. For a number of years I have been both privileged and burdened to share the confidences, problems, heartaches, talents and joys of many young people in this area. In the beginning I was shocked and appalled and many times I wanted to cry out “No more, tell me no more.” The I realized that I was getting an education; maybe there was something that someone could, do to help my family and I tried to help wherever and whenever we could. I might add that only a few of these young people came from under-privileged or broken homes. I do not have the solution for the problems con fronting our young people nor do I profess to be an authority on this subject. From what I have learned I believe there are some answers and we need to work together and start somewhere. Each week you read in your local newspaper about some young person in trouble or you hear about what the boy or girl down the street is doing but do you really know what your son or daughter is involved in? Years ago I suggested and still feel that parents, responsible citizens and concerned young people could organize, work together and set certain goals that should: 1- provide gathering places with a positive at mosphere; have Christian counseling available for those in need. 2- promote com munication and un derstanding between parents and teenagers. 3- encourage parents to be open with each other and learn from those parents of young people who are in trouble or who have been in NOTICE TO CHOWJIN COUNTY TAXPAYERS Your 1978 toxes are due on Janu ary 3, 1979. Broad St Edenton trouble. 4- promote better relationships between law enforcement and today’s youth; strive to educate and reprimand those few law officers who through ignorance, and-or tac tlessness promote ill-will from teenagers toward all law enforcement. Item number four could be accomplished by enlisting the support and cooperation of such citizens as Sheriff Toppin, Chief Parrish, Capt. Harvey Williams, Bob Roberson, and Mayor Roy Harrell. They are concerned and they care. I know that to follow up on these recommendations would involve much effort and time for many people. There is much effort, time and money spent to preserve Edenton’s past and this I agree with wholeheartedly because I, too love Edenton but can we afford to do less for Edenton’s future, our young people?
