A retired farmer and native of Chowan County, he was a member of Ballard’s Bridge Baptist Church where he served as chair man of the Board of Deacons and as a Sunday School teacher. He was a charter member of Chowan Ruritan Club. The son of the late Nina Bass Bateman and the later Luther G. Bateman, he is survived by his wife, Mrs. Minnie Hollowell Bateman. The Index registered 155.5,0.3 per cent below the March level. The decrease in the Index resulted from lower non agricultural employment and average manufacturing workweek. Average hourly earnings were up modestly. The decline in manufacturing employment reflected decreases in the non-durable goods sector, where employment in textiles and apparel was down.
