Melton Leroy Bateman,
73, of Route 1, Tyner died
Monday in Chowan Hospital
of a sudden illness.
A retired farmer and
native of Chowan County, he
was a member of Ballard’s
Bridge Baptist Church
where he served as chair
man of the Board of
Deacons and as a Sunday
School teacher. He was a
charter member of Chowan
Ruritan Club.
The son of the late Nina
Bass Bateman and the later
Luther G. Bateman, he is
survived by his wife, Mrs.
Minnie Hollowell Bateman.
Other survivors include
two brothers, Bennie

James E. Howell, 82, half

Sunday in Albemarle
Hospital. A native of
Perquimans County, he was
the husband of Mrs. Minnie
Baccus Howell.

Station, Elizabeth City, he
was also an employee of
Consolidated Aircraft Corp.
and owned Howell’s Lawn
Mower Repair Shop. He was
an Army Veteran erf World
War I and a member of
American Legion Post 84
and the Pentecostal

Business Activity Declines
The level of business
activitiy in North Carolina
declined slightly in April,
according to the Wachovia
Business Index. The Index
registered 155.5,0.3 per cent
below the March level.
The decrease in the Index
resulted from lower non
agricultural employment
and average manufacturing
workweek. Average hourly
earnings were up modestly.
The decline in
manufacturing employment
reflected decreases in the
non-durable goods sector,
where employment in
textiles and apparel was
down.
Non-manufacturing em
ployment was down
marginally. Increases in
sale will be required to make a
deposit in the sum of ten per
cent of the first $1,000.00 bid,
plus five per cent of all over
$1,000.00.
