Thursday, June 14, 1979 The Bandon Notebook: Recollections Os Our Fathers | By Maggie B. Father’s Day! On the third Sunday of each June wL take time out to honor all t#e hard working fathers and to remember all the things they have done to make our life worthwhile. When we were children, we looked up to that “giant” of a man and thought he could do no wrong. Daddy was always at work before the children were up. When he came home, all of us knew it was supper time - time to come in, clean up and get to bur places at the table, then, mama and daddy would take their places, we’d all join hands and daddy would say the “blessing”. He was always “What is the gift you will give your boy? A glamorous game, a tinseled toy, A whittling knife, a puzzle pack, A train that runs on a curving track, A Boy Scout book, a real live pet? No, there’s plenty of time for such things yet. Give him a day for his very own... Just your boy and his dad alone; A walk in the woods, a game in the park, A fishing trip from dawn to dark. Give him the gift that only you can... The companionship of his “old man.” Games are outgrown and toys decay, But he’ll never forget if you give him a day. ” This Lord’s Day dawned bright and beautiful! Birds were singing joyfully, flying to and fro - waters of the Chowan River sparkled and gently lapped the shore. A deep breath filled one’s lungs with clean, fresh air causing a feeling of peace, goodwill and thanksgiving to completely encompass your being. Supt. B. Kent Rowley welcomed those assembled at Bandon Chapel for Sunday School with a big smile and Christian enthusiasm. He called attention to the lovely arrangement of wild flowers which graced our altar. This lovely bouquet - Queen Anne’s Lace, Tiger Lilies and green foliage - was 'Hound” and arranged by our <r Guardian Angel”, Hilda Wiener. After a report of those on our Prayer List, Supt. Rowley reminded everyone that Vacation Bible School would begin Monday at 9 A.M. He announced that Prayer Meeting will be Wednesday at 7 P.M. in Fellowsip Hall with Dr. Bill leading the discussion. Choir practice follows at 8 P.M. The ladies of the BCWG will get together after Bible School on Thursday if they so desire. Next Thursday (21st) all June birthdays will be celebrated and the Silent Auction will be held. Plan to be present to enjoy the fun and fellowship. Prayer List: When we pray, we pray for the physical and spiritual well being of our friends. We know that prayers by God’s people ARE beard and answered. Please add our friends to your prayer list. Brother Bob Harvey is home now, dung fine and would enjoy company; Marion Phillips, although still weak, was at church • it was a joy to see him; Brother Len Loraska’s leg was am putated 4 inches below the knee last Friday but he’s in good spirits. Prayers, cards and visits would help to keep his spirits high. He’s in Portsmouth Naval Hospital, 6th Floor, Portsmouth, Va. Also pray that God will give ATTENDING BOYB STATE Then eight young men from Chowan County are attending Boya State on the campua of Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem. My daddy loved to sing and play his harmonica and instilled in his children a love for music. One of my fondest memories is of daddy, with mama on his lap, singing “Darling, I Am Growing Older” and mama harmonizing with him. He played ball with us; we went on picnics and sometimes, just riding in the country. When be went to town on Saturday, we could always count a treat - Hershey Kisses! Here’s a thought for all fathers. It’s author is unknown but the idea is perfect. The title is “A Day”: his wife, Sister Virginia, the strength she needs - she broke out with the “shingles” when Len lost his leg; Margaret Alstead is improving following surgery. She’s in Ports mouth Naval Hospital, 14th Floor. Prayers and cards will improve her morale; Ronald Ellingwood enters DePaul Hospital, Norfolk, Va. on Tuesday for surgery Friday. Pray for his com plete recovery; pray that God will heal Izzie and Meredith Barden both physically and mentally; please remember Jean Newman; Ruby Cherry; Jeannie Church; Catherine Barden; George Ramsey, Sr. and George Ramsey, Jr., “Pappy” Caisson; Bonnie Sue Brice; Wm. Aim was that adult Christians always do what is in the best in terests of every person with whom they interact. “Happy Birthday” was sung by aU in honor of Pat Bartley as she placed her contribution in our Birthday Bank. “Hie doors to this Church are as wide as the gates of Heaven and in Christ’s name, I bid you welcome”, stated Dr. W. J. B. Livingston as he welcomed the fine group assembled for the morning worship ser vice. He expressed joy and delight to see Jeannie Church and Doug Tise in our midst again. Also, he welcomed Marion Phillips and Clara Chappell, with us for the first time since hospitalization; and Mr. and Mrs. Cross from Suffolk. Dr. Bill’s inspiring message was “How to Hear the Voice of God”, I Sam. 3:1-14, with emphasis on vs. 10. The Lord has spoken to very few people the way He spoke to Samuel but God has spoken to them in other ways. God speaks to us if we are willing to listen but some people don’t care to hear the Word - don’t want to know what God is saying. The Scriptures say if we go through life and close our minds to the Words of the Lord, we will go down into Hell. God speaks to us through the Holy Spirit; Open the Bible and you will hear God speak to you. When you are at your wits end, come to the Bible and say “Lord, I am listening, what would you have me do?”. He will open the scriptures to you. Listen to what God says. Go to church and hear the Word of the Lord. Listen - hear God’s Word and obey what God asks that you do. Witness for Jesus Christ.
