Since most biDfishermen release their catch, no size or catch limits would apply, Nematode Detection Critical To Farmers RALEIGH - For most farmers this is a busy time of year. In addition to harvesting this year crops, it is time to start planting for next year’s and an im portant part of the planting process is die collection of fall nematode samples. Nematodes are microscopic, parasitic worms that live in the soil and feed on plant roots. The resulting damage to the root system can seriously affect crop performance and cause major yield losses. All crops grown in North Carolina have potential nematode problems. Some, such as soybean cyst nematodes and root-knot nematodes on tobacco, can reduce yields by more than 50 per cent in severely affected fields. It is only through careful sampling of fields that the presence of potentially serious nematode problems can be detected. Chowan Schools for the next week include: Friday Student holiday. Domestic swordfish fishermen would be allowed a s"frll by-catch of billfish under the plan to prevent disruption of this U. S. commercial fishery. Sampling for nematodes in the fall is recommended because the number present in the soil in generally highest then, making it easier to detect the pests. This permits accurate Assembly Dates Set Jehovah’s Wintesses in the Eastern North Carolina area announce that Williamston will again host their semi-annual circuit assembly. The two-day meeting is set for October 13 and 14 at the Williamston High School. Paul Nonkes, local minister and spokesman for the group said: “More that 1,000 Wintesses in the area will cancel their meetings this week-end to attend the sessions.” Commenting on the theme: “Proving Ourselves Fruitful Disciples,’’ Nonkes said: “Witnesses must prove that they are fruitful disciples by a productive public service in imitation of their master and teacher, Jesus Christ.” W.H. Dail of Raleigh will Enrollment Another new record number of students, 19,803- strong, are studying the sciences, technologies, humanities and arts this fall at North Carolina State University. That total headcount is 1,327 above the fall semester of 1978, the previous record enrollment in the 90-year history of the Land-Grant University. “North Carolina State is overflowing,” Chancellor Joab L. Thomas said. He noted with a grin: “The students are overflowing the campus, they are over flowing Hillsborough Square and they’re overflowing the Chancellor’s residence.” The NCSU students came to the Raleigh campus from each of North Carolina’s 100 counties, all 49 other states, three U.S. territories and 85 other nations. Twenty-two are from Chowan county. Also registering in ever increasing numbers are black students, who total 1,229 this sally, a 15 per cent jump over the 1,061 a year ago. That total does not include students from African nations who are counted among 870 foreign students this fall. Jewelry Jottings —By R. W. The Gulf of Mexico’s 200 mile limit would be closed to foreign longliners annually from May 16 through Oc recommendations for the control of potential nematode problems. Fall sampling also allows plenty of time for farmors to in clude nematode control strategies in the next year’s preside and deliver the public address: “Whose Disciples Are You?”, Sunday at 2 P.M. An item on the program: “Keeping Free From Babylon’s Bad Fruitage”, draws this comment from Nonkes: “Witnesses must them selves stay free and give help to honest people who want to free themselves from the moral and spiritual uncleanness of this religious world.” A baptismal service will be provided for new Wit nesses, who, having studies the Scriptures over the past several months, have come to the point of dedicating their lives to the service of Jehovah God. Plant-parasitic nema todes can be controlled by several methods in cluding crop rotation, planting nematode resistant varieties and use of nematiddes. Analysis of fall nematode samples may also indicate a Add does not have a potential nematode problem and save farmers the unnecessary expense of chemical treatments. Far the best protection against possible nematode damage North Carolina farmers should sample every field every year or two. It is extremely im portant to sample those fields which have a history of poor productivity or problem areas within a field. Great care must be taken in collecting and handling nematode samples. Results of the nematodes assay are no better than the sample submitted. tauk Point, New York, would be dosed during July, August and September each year. The plan recommends the release of all billfish which are not intended for use as food or trophies and urges that released fish be tagged NAS personnel will determine the type and number of nematodes present in each sample. With this knowledge and information supplied by the farmer an crop history of the field an assessment can be made of the potential nematode hazard to the next crop along with recom mendations on how to avoid major damage and economic losses. A small investment of time and money can save North Carolina farmers thousands of dollars that could be lost through failure to detect nematode problems or by eliminating unnecessary use of nematiddes.
