"Close Up” Program
“It gave us a chance to see
politicians in the literal
sense of die word.” \
“1 enjoyed meeting people
heated discussions on
controversial matters.”
“Self-discipline played a
maja rale.”
“As a history teacher, I
learned a lot”
“I didn’t realize how hard
our government officials
work fir us.”
“dose Up brings
education forward into
doing something with it”
“I want to go back.”
These comments came
from local students and
teachers who participated in
National and State Close Up
programs last year.
The national Close Up
Foundation was originated
ten years ago as away of
bringing government closer
to the people and has proved
quite successful as a forum
for involving youth in
government.
Through the national
Close Up program,
Washington, D. C., becomes
the classroom and provides
an unusual educational
experience fa more than
13,000 students from 29
communities across the
country. Fa it is at this time
that students put aside their
textbooks and travel to
Washington fa a one week,
first-hand assessment of
their government.
Students from John A.
Holmes and Chowan high
schools and the Alternative
School want to go to
Washington April 13-17 to
gain a greater familiarity
with the machanics and
practicalities of government
and to gain a clearer, more
realistic view of the scope
and function of the federal
government. Because of
their interest and because of
the expanse involved, ap
proximately 20 students are
preparing to roll up their
sleeves to earn money for
this unusual experience. In
doing so, they will involve
parents and^compninity.
