18 THE CHOWAN IISRALJD Thursday, Fab' 28, IMS Pubic Input Is Soidted A series of public hearings has been announced by the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council to gain public input on a Fishery Management Plan for King and Spanish Mackerel. The Flan, which covers fisheries in the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean from Texas to North Carolina, is being developed jointly with the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council and is designed to produce an optimum yield within the 200 mile limit. Among the issues at the hearings are: - Minimum catch length of 12 inches of 12 inches for Spanish mackerel. - No King mackerel under 25 inches in length may . be sold. • Use of Purse seines and trawls. - Minimum gill net mesh size of 4 % inches. - Stipulate of quotas for commercial and recreational fishermen. - Separation of gill netters and commercial hand liners in time and space to reduce conflict in the Fort Pierce area. - Minimum catch length of 33 inches for cobia, which are taken frequently in cidental to mackerel fishing. In addition, the Council is recommending a man datory catch reporting system for both commercial and recreational fishermen to provide accurate data to assist the Council in monitoring the effectiveness of management measures aimed at achieving the objectives specified in die plan. Summary copies of the plan will be available for study in advance of the hearings at all Marine Advisory Offices, some Coastal County Extension Offices, Coastal Con servation Offices, and at Council headquarters, 1 Southpark Circle, Suite 306, Charleston, South Carolina. The schedule of public hearings for North Carolina include Hatteras Civic Center, Hatteras, March 10, 7-10 P.M.; Carteret Technical Institute Audi torium, Morehead City, March 11, 7-10 P.M.; and Hilton Inn, Garden Room, Wilmington, March 12, 7-10 P.M.
