Eliminating Medical Fraud
FORT LEE, Va. - Phase
one of a new computerized
enrollment system to record
and verily the eligibility for
military health and medical
care benefits of all active
duty and retired military
personnel, their dependents
and survivors, is underway.
The system, the Defense
Enrollment - Eligibility
Reporting System
(DEERS), is being in
troduced initially in selected
areas of southwestern
Virginia and northeastern
North Carolina through
April 1960. Some 400,000
persons in these areas will
be enrolled.
Presently, random spot
checks are being made of
dependents and service
members in the Virginia
and North Carolina areas to
Verify eligibility for health
Care. These checks are
made on those requesting
medical care of any kind, or
on those who pick up
prescriptions at military or
Public Health Service
facilities.
i If a person’s eligibility for
medical care is verified by
DEERS, no further action of
the individual will be
required. If it is not verified,
he or she will be directed to
report to the appropriate
military personnel office to
enroll in the DEERS
system.
No one will be turned
away or denied medical
care for no being enrolled,
But those who later prove
ineligible for health care,
will be billed for any care
they may have received for
which they were not entitled.
Active duty and retired
personnel are automatically
enrolled in DEERS by their
oganizational respective
service. Dependents of
