Tornado Awareness Week, Mar. 3-9 The State of North Carolina will„participate „ith a number, of other states in 1,1 a j Tornado Awareness Week. The purpose is tb alert and in form the various public agencies and the general public to the threat that these brief but r dangerouß storms offer. Sometime during the week of March 3-8, 1980, there will be a Tornado Watch and a Tornado Warning Drill that will be conducted statewide. The purpose of the drill is to test the dissemination process. Tornadoes are short-lived local storms containing high-speed winds usually rotating in a counter clockwise direction. These are often observable as a funnel-shaped appendage to a thunderstorm cloud. Hie funnel is initially composed of nothing more than con densed water vapor pnd is itself a cloud. However, when the circulation of the funnel reaches the ground, it usually picks up dpst and debris, which eventually darkens the entire funnel. Tomadic damage can occur on the ground even though the visible condensation funnel does not seem to reach the ground. Scientists now believe that the tornado begins within an intense thunderstorm cloud and then develops down ward to the earth’s surface. Not all thunderstorms Will spawn tornadoes, but when the proper weather con ditions are present (un seasonably warm and humid air at the earth’s surface, cold air at middle atmospheric levels, and* THECHOyytN strong upper level “jet stream” winds), severe thunderstorms and tor nadoes are more likely to occur. Tornadoes sometimes occur with several smaller vortices rotating inside and around the wall of the parent torando. On the average, tornado paths are only a quarter of a mile-about- one-half km wide and seldom more than 15 miles-about 25 km long. Tornadoes usually move from the south, southwest or west at about 30 mph-about 50 kph. But it’s the longer lived tornadoes, that usually move at more than 40 mph- Gas Is Best Energy Buy A new American Gas Association study which compares future home heating costs of fuel oil, natural gas and electricity shows that “gas energy will continue to be the American consumer’s best energy buy” according to A.G.A. President George Lawrence. Entitled Con sumer Costs of Natural Gas and Alternative House Heating Fuel, the study tracks historical and projected residential heating prices and com pares them to average disposable family income. “Gas energy will continue to cost the average homeowner less than competing fuels through 1990 and beyond, and this means the average family will pay out less of its disposable income in 1990 for gas home heating fuel than for either oil or elec tricity,” Lawrence stated. He emphasized that “Natural gas househeating costs, which are usually 60 to 90 per cent of total gas bills, will continue to con sume only about 1.5-1.7 per cent of the average U.S. disposable family income through 1990 and beyond, while home heating fuel oil and electricity bills will demand 2.5 and 4.0 per cent, respectively.” The A.G.A. study shows that all househeating fuel Church of God Welcomes You 901 Johnston St Edenton, N. Over the same two year period, inflation alone is assured to comprise almost 23 per cent of these estimates. “It is clearly demon strated in this study that, when viewed in terms of disposable family income, past natural gas price in creases have not had significant economic impact on most residential con sumers,” Lawrence said, “and future gas price in creases, consistent with phased deregulation of well • FREE ESTIMATES * COMPARE PRICES 26 EDENTON, - ■(« * **••> f • •-•• „ ..... •*■' ' &ReOc Tyfer downtown eden ton At a time when prices are going up ...Belk Tyler brings prices down! fibril save 20 % jAIL 3 days only oH THURSDAY, FRIDAY, SATURDAY I every bolt, every roll of fashion |v\\ \vksVsMJ fabric in stock...now 20% off! Lord, you said I seemed to know when your funds were getting low, and shared my food with you so that you would not go hungry until the third of the next month. I don’t remember doing any of this for you Lord. Please explain.
