Page 2-B News From The ASCS Report Wheat Planted For Harvest Planted acreage reports for wheat, rye, oats -and barley for harvest must be filed before May 15,1980. Acreage reports should be as accurate as possible. These reports are needed so you will be qualified if ‘ payments are made later in the year. Peanut and Tobacco Leasing The 1980 peanut and tobacco notices have been mailed to producers. We are now accepting lease and transfer agreements until April 15, 1980. Please note the change in the final date for lease & transfers - April 15, 1980. Tobacco Warehouse Designations Will Also Be Accepted Until April 15 1980. Tobacco Four Leaf Program In Effect For 1980 Producers who agree to leave four leaves of lower stalk tobacco (not including leaves commonly referred to as plant bed leaves) in the field can plant up to a maximum erf 110 per cent of the farm acreage allotment and receive price support. An agreement indicating a desire to participate in the program must be filed at the county office by April 15, and a fee must be paid to cover the cost of making a farm visit to determine compliance within terms of the agreement. Flue-Cured Tobacco Discount Program The discount variety program for flue-cured tobacco is in effect for the 1980 crop. Discount varieties are: Coker 139, Coker 140, Coker, 316, Dixie Bright 244, Reams 64,187 Golden Wilt, and any other breeding line having the characteristics of the discount varieties. Prior to the issuance of a tobacco marketing card, farmers will be required to certify as to whether they planted a discount variety of tobacco on their farm. Premeasurement Since all tobacco and peanut farms will be measured this year, you might want to be sure of your planted acreage through premeasurement services. 1980 premeasurement rates are: $5.00 plus SI.OO per accre for all com modities except tobacco; $1.50 per acre for tobacco with a $12.50 minimum per farm. An extra $3.00 fee will be collected on each ap plication to help with the increase cost of gasoline and will be paid directly to the reporter. You are encouraged to file your request now for this service or as soon as possible after lease and transfers are completed. Change In Farm Operations Any farm operator change or ownership change should be reported to us as early as possible so that our records may be kept current. Two Are Appointed Governor Jim Hunt today named Earl Smith of Edenton, Carson Stout of High Point and Harold L. Stephenson of Oriental to the Marine Fisheries Commission. Smith is the owner of Smith’s Store in Rocky Hock. He is a member of the Local Board of Managers of Peoples Bank and Trust Co., and is on the Board of Directors of Chowan Hospital, Inc. He is a reappointee to the com mission. Stephenson is a com mercial fisherman and seafood dealer. He is a member of the Oriental Town Board. Stout is the owner of Carson, Inc., an upholstery and office furniture firm. He is chairman of the High Point Housing Authority and is on the Board of Governors for Wachovia Bank and Trust in High Point. He is a reappointee to the com mission. The commission consists of 15 members, all ap pointed by the Governor. Members serve for a term of six years.
