Thursday. April 24, 1960 Hospital Requests New X-Ray Equipment David L. Henson, Director of Chowan Hospital, Inc., Edenton, filed notice on April 17, 1980 of intent to incur a capital expenditure for the purpose of leasing replacement x-ray equip ment. The equipment is scheduled to become operational in September, 1980 and is estimated to cost $138,950. The project proposal has been submitted to the Letter To The Editor: Intergration Study Conducted Dear Sir: Last year I undertook a personal effort to determine the level of intergration at our Baptist schools in North Carolina. This was the first and possibly the last survey of human rights at these institutions. This survey showed the level of student intergration at Chowan, Wingate and Gardner-Webb were progressive; Meredith, Campbell and Wake-Forest were low and Mars-Hill was in the middle. Eleven black faculty were employed at all seven schools. Two schools, Campbell and Chowan, had no black faculty even though Chowan is the most in tergrated of the seven schools. Only one black, Howard Lee at Wake Forest, has ever served as a school trustee. At present trustees must be members of Baptist State Convention churches, ; -§ Whotever it tokes to horvest tugger yields from your row crops see your Produc tion C recto Assoootion about rhe fmonool help you H need PCA offers short ond intermediate term credit for oil types of operating expenses equipment home improvements ond fomily and uthei needs Our loons ore mode at reosonoble rates ond repay men- e scheduled to fit reofesncolly mto your harvesting ptons So no matter what crops you grow talk to the ogncuhurol financing specialists of your Production Credit Associqfion A lot goes mto agriculture PCA covers it Albemarle Production Credit Assn. The planning agencies, in examining the proposal, will seek to determine whether the project is needed, if it which are almost all white. This requirement was relaxed for Wake-Forest last year and I feel it should be relaxed for our other institutions also. This would allow minority represen tation. However, each school does have an advisory board that is chosen and controlled by each school. Out of 399 persons serving at all seven schools only two were black persons. Wake Forest and Gardner-Webb are to be commended for having these. I feel this shows that there has been very little effort made by our schools to seek minority input at the decision making level. Was this the last in tergration survey? All schools, except Wake- Forest and Gardner-Webb, have refused to supply the same information now they freely gave last year. They say any additional in formation must come from can be adequately staffed and operated, whether it is economically feasible within prevailing rate structures, and if it proposes specific cost-containment features. Copies of the proposal have been referred to the Eastern Carolina Health Systems Agency, Inc., - Greenville, NC, for review as required by federal law. In its role as coordinator the Council On Christian Higher Education, this council is our Baptist School Board in North Carolina. The Council says no in formation will be released unless the Executive Committee or the General Board of our Convention request it. Study To Be Conducted The federal Office of Coastal Zone Management (OCZM) will conduct its annual evaluation of the North Carolina Coastal Management program the week of April 28. In con junction with the evaluation, OCZM will hold a public meeting on April 30 in Wilmington at the New Hanover County Ad ministrative Building, Commissioner’s Assembly Room, 320 Chestnut St., from 7 to 10 p.m. Organizations or in dividuals wishing to present comments on the state’s coastal management ac tivities are welcome. The Department will then decide on the recom mendation to be made to the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services con cerning the project. The Council will meet at Gardner-Webb College in May. I plan to ask the Counncil to reconsider this ban on pertinent Baptist information. Harrill Jones 1104 East Oqark Avenue Gastonia, N.C. 28052 NW, Washington, D. C., 20235. Written comments will be accepted until May 2. The purpose of the evaluation is to determine the state’s progress in carrying out its work program' and meeting the objectives of the national Coastal Zone Management Act. Adequate progress must be found before the state can receive additional federal funds for coastal program administration. Economic Workshop To Be Held A workshop to help small communities revitalize their downtowns will be held May 1, at Martin Community College in Williamston. This is the last in a series of economic development workshops being held in the area by the North Carolina Department of Commerce. Subjects covered at the revitalization workshops will include financing, meeting the credit needs for downtown investors, and marketing studies. Community leaders who were unable to attend the first two sessions are invited to attend this last workshop. The workshop is open to the public and there is no fee. The downtown revitalization workshop is being conducted with the Department of Natural Resources and Community Development and the North Carolina Downtown Development Association. The workshops are part of the state’s Community of Excellence program, which is an economic development program to assist com munities under 15,000 people.
