Byrd served for 18 years in the Virginia Senate prior to his appointment to the Conservation Strategy Pondered RALEIGH - North Carolina Department of Transportation is proposing away to conserve as much as 3-million gallons of gasoline a year. In a recent study it was determined that if just one half of the 4,700 traffic lights in the state highway system were put on flash between the hours of 11 P.M. and 6 A.M. we could save 3 million gallons of gasoline per year. Transportation Secretary Tom Bradshaw sent a letter to town and city officials across North Carolina asking them to join in the conservation effort. Bradshaw said, “The response has been great. Burlington had already undertaken the program, and I’m happy to announce that on Monday, April 21, Wilmington will also.” However, as Bradshaw pointed out, it’s imperative that while selecting those signals that may be placed on flash, safety must remain our most vital con sideration. - Vote - WALTER B.
