Page 10-A Cash Prizes To Be Awarded In Great Dismal Raft Race ELIZABETH CITY Jaycees July 4 chairman, Gary Jones, announces that cash prizes will be awarded for the Great Dismal Raft Race. Held annually in connection with Jaycee activities on July 4 at Waterfront Park, the Raft Race will begin at 4 P.M. Elizabeth City Shipyard owner, Mary Hadley Griffin, said that the firm would award cash prizes to the three top race finishers and the “most original” raft, in addition to trophies supplied by the Jaycees. All “vessels” must be home built, must have at least two crew members, and all particpants must wear life jackets. Dale Touring With Drum; Bugle Corps Edenton native Lynn Dale is touring with the “Garfield Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps, a nationally ranked marching organization, for the 1980 competitive season. Drum Corps blending all forms of music to precise and almost exaggerated visual performances, is the largest youth oriented, crowd appealing activity in the United States and Canada. Today’s com petitive marching bands are shaped to resemble these drum corps. Dale, a 16-year-old rising senior at John A. Holmes High School, is one of the Cadets’ 33 percussionists. As a member of this section, he has practiced up to six hours a day to maintain Garfield’s reputation for high drum execution. Though several states of the Atlantic Seaboard are represented in the Garfield, N. J. based corps, Dale is the only North Carolinian to become a member. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Dale of Edenton, and a member of the John A. Holmes Mar ching Aces. The Index registered 156.8,0.5 per cent below the revised April level. Decreases in manufac turing employment, the manufacturing workweek, and price-adjusted average hourly earnings for manufacturing employees all contributed to the decline in the Index. Non manufacturing employment was unchanged from the AprU level. Manufacturing em ployment decreased 1.1 per cent, reflecting nearly equal declines in the durable and non-durable goods sectors. Furniture, textile, and apparel industries all reported employment losses of about 1 per cent. In the non-manufacturing sector, construction employment was down 0.9 per cent, while Recreation News TENNIS LESSONS Tennis lessons will be given for ages 5 - 12, July 8 thru August 1.
