ACP Fall Sign-Up: The
ACP sign-up for fall prac
tices such as cover crop and
tree planting will be held
August 4 through August 15,
1980.
Anyone requesting cost
sharing assistance during
that two week period will
receive assistance unless
that particular farm has
already received assistance
in 1980.
First Tobacco Warehouse
Redesignation Period:
Producers who failed to
designate their tobacco
warehouse during the initial
designation period, or who
wish to change their
warehouse designation,
may do so during the first
redesignation period that
begins Monday, July 28 and
ends Friday, August 1. The
effective marketing date for
tobacco redesignation
during the first period will
be Monday, August 11.
Tobacco marketing cards
covering tobacco that is to
be redesignated must be
presented at the county
ASCS office by the farm
operator when
redesignation.

Business Index
The level of business
activity in North Carolina
continued downward in
June, according to the
Wachovia Business Index.
The Index registered 155.7,
0.9 per cent below the
revised May level.
The decline, the largest
since December, 1974,
resulted from losses in
manufacturing and non
manufacturing em
ployment, the manufac
turing workweek, and price
adjusted average hourly
earnings for manufacturing
employees.
Manufacturing em
ployment was down 1 per
cent, reflecting decreases in
both the durable and non
durable goods sectors.

furniture showed the largest
percentage losses, while
tobacco and food registered
employment gains. In the
non-manufacturing sector,
construction, trade, ser
vices and government all
had employment declines,

from May. The national rate
for June was 7.7 per cent,
down 0.1 per cent from May.
The unadjusted unem
ployment rate in North
Carolina was 7.4 per cent in
June.

Continued to lag behind last
year’s totals. Car sales were
down 16.4 per cent from the
fcame period last year, while
truck sales were down 24.9

205 East Eden Street died
(Tuesday afternoon in
Chowan Hospital after an
extended illness.
, A native of Chowan
County, he was the husband
of Mrs. Dorothy Smith
Phillips and a son of the late
John and Lucy Anne Dutton
Phillips.
He was a member of
Jsdenton Baptist Church and
Was a repairman for Spedic
Vending Service,

three daughters: Mrs.
Dorothy Marie Cool of
Virginia Beach; Mrs. Peggy
Brabble of Edenton; and
Mrs. Linda Rae Merz of
Virginia Beach; two sons,
Madison Phillips, Jr., and

Cisters, Mrs. Grethel Clark
f Edenton and Mrs. Lillie
Belle Chancey of West Palm
Beach, Fla.; one brother,

and 16 grandchildren.
A funeral service will be

warehouse, or to the local

Marketing Card • 1980 Crop:
If you use or permit the use
of your marketing card to
falsely identify tobacco
from another farm, heavy
marketing quota penalties
will be due and reduction in
acreage allotments and
poundage quotas for the
farms involved can be
made. This provision also
applies to all farms which
produce tobacco, since each
farm’s tobacco must be kept
separately. To avoid these

Crop Disaster Program:
Farmers that planted
wheat, barley, com or grain
sorghum and who filed a
timely acreage report will
be eligible for disaster
protection. Disaster
payments can be made on
losses resulting from
weather or other causes
beyond the farmer’s control.
Payment is one-half the
applicable target price for
the loss below 60 per cent of
normal yield. An application
