#. Thursday. September 18. iabq Green Declines Debate While campaigning this week, Lieutenant Governor candidate Bill Cobey has expressed his disap pointment that Lt. Gov. Green has continuously refused to debate him. Cobey said: “Lt. Gov. Green declined to debate the issues with me on the grounds that his record was so familiar to the people of North Carolina that the debate would serve ‘no useful purpose.’ “I beg to differ with Mr. Green. “In my extensive travels around the state, I have encountered numerous people who are unfamiliar with Mr. Green’s record as Lieutenant Governor and unaware of some of the issues relevant to that of fice. “The truth, so it would ■■HjHHHBi f/ .;> vfV W f : d^Sr GOP HOPEFUL—BiII Cobey WANTED! Mr. Green’s assertion that his record is well known to the people of North Carolina is evidence that Mr. Green is out of touch with the people of North Carolina. “Mr. Green has further, stated that anyone who is unfamiliar with his record can come to the Legislature and examine it. Obviously, this is not a feasible course for the many North Carolinians who would welcome enlightenment concerning Mr. Green’s record but have neither the time nor the money to come to Raleigh and do so. This is just Mr. Green’s way of dodging the issue. “Might I suggest that Mr. Green’s reluctance to debate is due to the fact that he is unwilling for certain elements of his record to come to the light provided by the public scrutiny surrounding a series of statewide debates. “Consider the following: -Under Mr. Green’s stewardship as President of the Senate, our taxes in North Carolina have in creased by 54 per cent and state spending has grown by 57 per cent. -Mr. Green recently ap proved in the abbreviated summer session a 10 per cent pay raise for all Legislators, himself in cluded. I, on the other hand, advocate returning the office of Lt. Governor to a part-time position, with an appropriate decrease in salary. -Mr. Green has employed an SBI agent, who is paid $20,000 a year, as his per sonal chauffeur. This fact becomes even more up setting in light of the reports released recently from Attorney General Rufus Edmisten’s office con cerning the vast increase in crime in North Carolina over the last year and Mr. Green’s own statements that this state needs more SBI agents to combat the crime problem. “These and other issues which portray Mr. Green’s lack of regard for the tax payers dollars are possible reasons behind his refusal to debate. “But whatever his reasons, I respectfully urge Mr. Green to reconsider his position not to debate. “Certainly a man who is running on his record, as Mr. Green says that he is, should be proud enough of it to expose it to the voters of North Carolina in a series of public forums. I believe that a series of debates between Mr. Green and 1 will be a great service to the people of North Carolina and will greatly enhance the effort to achieve good government in this state.” Preparations Are Made Center Hill Extension Homemakers are preparing to operate the Center Hill concession stand during the Chowan County Fair, Sept. 22-27. THE CHOWAN HERA, Stamp Company Survey Sets Book Value In spite of difficult economic times, an average book of S&H Green Stamps is still worth $3, according to a recent survey conducted by the Sperry and Hut chinson Company’s research department. The survey, which has been periodically conducted by the 85 year old stamp company, once again firmly set the value of its book of 1,200 Green Stamps at $3 when compared with prices charged by department stores and discount stores. S&H, which is the oldest and largest trading stamp company in the country, has long maintained its average $3 book value. The recent survey compared the prices of the same items in both discount and department stores across the country and found that the average price compared with department stores is $3.37 and with discount stores $2.66. The surveyed items were in categories ranging from housewares to shop and garden supplies. Kit chenware items resulted in the biggest combined (department and discount store) book value at $3.22. Home appliances were the lowest at an average book value of $2.65. S&H lists approximately 1,400 different items of merchandise in their 1980 catalog. The prices established for those items are firm for the one year life of the catalog. ■ POTATO L CHIPS j LIMIT 4 BAGS. NO DEALERS. Jesse Helms (R --“has done an ex ceptional job of represen ting the citizens of North Carolina,” the chairman of a nationwide citizens action organization said yesterday. Rhonda Stahlman, chairman of Conservatives Against Liberal Legislation (CALL), said her organization gave Helms a Overpayments Are Recovered RALEIGH The N. C. Security Commission recovered $147,042,72 in unemployment insurance overpayments during August according to figures released by the com mission’s anti-fraud unit. The unit investigated 222 persons who have claimed or currently are claiming unemployment insurance benefits. Os that number 136, or 61 per cent, were found to have been overpaid $52,502. The commission classified 91 of those cases, representing $24,390, as non fraud and 45 cases, representing $28,112, as fraud. During August, 17 persons were tried in state courts for unemployment insurance fraud and 16, or 94 per cent, were convicted. Os the overpayments recovered $27,375.62 was recovered through refunds to the commission and $119,667 was recovered by withholding new benefits to claimants who have been overpaid. 100 per cent rating for pro taxpayer, pro-defense, and pro-family votes in the Congress. “The Senator has sup ported legislation throughout his career that offers solutions to the problems created by liberals in Congress. And his distinguished record has always been consistent with the needs and the concerns of the people of North Carolina. “For instance, Senator Helms has cast his vote against the creation of yet another needless bureaucractic institution - the Department of Education. Today the federal government is growing rapidly, at the expense of the individual American. Senator Helms has withstood the pressure of a growing federal bureaucracy by consistently supporting tax relief for over-burdened taxpayers. “He also recognizes the need to increase defense spending to insure freedom and peace for our nation. And he voted against the give-away of our Panama Canal in the interest of our national security and the stability of Central America. “Sen. Helms has the courage and has taken the initiative to represent the people of North Carolina the way he was trusted to do. The liberal bureaucrats in Congress have practically destroyed this country with runaway inflation and a deep recession, simultaneously. They have Page 5-B cost people their jota*. their security, and their hope for the future. “Sen. Helms offers the type of leadership this country needs to make America great again.” According to the CALL rating, Senator Helms is the only member of the North Carolina congressional delegation to receive a perfect 100 per cent rating. Other senators scoring 100 per cent are Sen. Barry Goldwater (R-AZ), Sen. Paul Laxalt (R-NV), and Sen. Orrin Hatch (R --UT). “Sen. Helms is in good company,” Stahlman smiled. In Memoriam In loving memory of our loved one, Mr. Sam Wright, who God called away from us one year ago, August 17, 1979. We love you and miss you, as we did before you left us and more. When you don’t come home, it makes us so sad and lonely; but now you are happy up there around God’s throne with all our loved ones and friends who have gone on before. We will grieve until we can see you again; then I can smile again and be happy as we were before. There will be no more heart aches, no more tears, no more goodbyes. We will be together forever. We love you. (Written by his wife, Mrs. Cora Wright, his children, and all of his friends who loved him.)
