(SCS Photo) Combines Mean More Acres Mapped When the fall harvest gets started it means the busiest sesason of the year is here for our local soil survey party. The soil survey party, consisting of three soil scientists, is making soil maps of all land in Chowan and Perquimans counties. Phil Tant, party leader and soil scientist Robert Ranson are stationed at the Area 5 Soil Conservation Service office in Edenton. Soil scientist John Scott has an office in Hertford at the district Soil Conservation Service Office. These men like to see the combines harvesting corn because they know it means more acres mapped in a day’s work. Party leader Phil Tant says: “The combines really open up the land for us. We can see the lay of the land much better and with the crops off the land we can use the all terrain cycles to cover ground much faster and more thoroughly.” The all ms! >■ • . * —' ’ If your air conditioner has a heat stroke, your heater becomes an ice maker or your drains run full speed in reverse... fe|£S| 0s We are your heating, plumbing and air conditioning contractor. Each soil scientist makes borings as he goes across the land noting the color, texture (sandy to clayey) and drainage class of each site. From these and other soil features he identifies the soil type into one of 34 soil series used in Chowan and Perquimans counties. He records his findings on an aerial photo and later draws a map on the photograph which outlines the location of the various soil types (or series) in that part of the county. If you would like soil in formation in Chowan or Perquimans Counties contact Tony Short. Soil information is available to everyone through your local Soil & Water Conservation District. Anyone interested should contact District Conservationist Tony Short in Hertford (426-5545) or Soil Conservation Technician Stanton Harrell in Edenton (482-4127). In other permit actions, the commission upheld issuing a CAMA major development permit to Quail Woods Access Cor poration, New Hanover County, to construct a boat ramp and dock. The CRC granted a partial variance from oceanfront setback regulations to Shell Island Development Corporation, New Hanover County, contingent on changes in its subdivision proposal. In the coming year, the commission will look at refining its standards on oceanfront setbacks, oceanfront bulkheading, inlet area development, beach access, marina and canal construction and necessary public trust water shoreline AEC designation. The commission will also examine more detailed standards for reducing the adverse effects of permitted coastal development. The commission adopted Coastal Area Management Act (CAMA) regulations on civil penalty notification procedures, modified erosion rates for a one-mile' oceanfront area south of Nags Head and adopted an interim rule permitting immediate repairs to storm damaged structures up to 50 per cent of their assessed value. The CRC will send several proposed amendments to CAMA regulations to public hearing. One proposal would honor agreed upon sub division layouts.
