Vepco Proposes
New Rate
ROANOKE RAPIDS -
Virginia Electric and Power
Company has proposed a
new residential rate for its
North Carolina retail
customers which would
reduce charges for in
dividuals whose home
construction meets certain
energy conservation
specifications.
If approved by the North
Carolina Utilities Com
misssion a customer who
uses 1,500 kilowatt-hours a
month for example would
save $3.87 a month or
$46.44 a year.
“this special rate is
designed to promote the
installation of maximum
conservation measures in
homes, ” according to Jerry
Causey, Vepco marketing
manager-Southem Division.
He pointed out that some
new, well-constructed
homes already meet the
standards. Older homes
frequently can be brought
into compliance with the
addition of insulation or
storm doors and windows.
To qualify for the rate a
structure’s ability to limit
the loss of heated air to the
outside must not exceed a
predetermined level.
Generally this standard
may be met if the following
material is in place:
-ceiling insulation of 10
inches of fiberglass batt or
insulation with a thermal
resistance value (R-rating)
of 30.
-exterior wall insulation of
three and one-half inches of
fiberglass batt or insulation
with an R-rating of 11
-floors over unheated
spaces with six inches of
fiberglass batt or insulation
with an R-rating of 19.
-all windows are either
double pan or have storm
windows.
-all doors either insulated
metal or have storm doors.
Once the rate is approved,
customers may apply by
contacting their local Vepco
office to arrange for a home
inspection to determine if
they qualify.
