Aim was that adult
Christians be filled with true
compassion for other human
beings -a compassion that
expresses itself in deeds.
“The doors of this Church
are as wide as the gates of
Heaven and in Christ’s
name, I bid you welcome”,
stated Chairman, Board of
Deacons, Thomas H.
Dilday, as he welcomed the
fine group assembled for
our Worship Service. He
gave a special welcome to
our first timers, Mr. and
Mrs. Henry Allen Bunch,
mother and father of our
guest speaker, and to his
uncle, Haywood Bunch and
his grandmother, Mrs.
Londa C. Early.
Our guest speaker, Allen
Bunch, is a native of Chowan
County, graduated from
John A. Holmes High
School, active in athletics,
specially football, and is
now studying at Gardner-
Webb College, Boiling
Springs, N.C. He was
licensed by the Edenton
Baptist Church to “Preach
the Gospel” on December
31, 1978. Mr. Bunch was
highly recommended by our
pastor, Rev. Robert Harrell,
and is interested in getting
young people started in the
right way.
The subject chosen by Mr.
Bunch was “Bound But Yet
Set Free”, Acts 16:22-31;
Phil. 4:4-7,13. Brief resume
follows: Today the world is
full of problems. Each in
dividual has problems and it
seems that each day brings
new problems. Our scrip
ture describes for us how
Pau] and Silas handled their
problems. After they were
severely beaten, thrown into
prison and shackled, they
prayed to God, sang hymns
and praised His Holy Name
and witnessed to other
prisoners. They humbled
themselves before God. At
midnight there was an
earthquake which set all the
prisoners free. The jailer
was about to take his life
when Paul called out to him
that all the prisoners were
still there. As a result, Paul
and Silas were able to gain
the jailer and his household
for Jesus.
The way we deal with our
problems determines the
type person we are. First,
the totally defeated person.
He cannot deal with his
problems. This person
thinks he can do it all on his
own. His plans, hopes, goals
and dreams go down the
drain. He is not a Christian •
he does not have Jesus in his
life, depends only on him
self. Second, the partially
defeated person. This
person is a Christian but
instead of turning his
problems over to God, tries
to handle them himself. He
puts a big “I” on the throne
and does not let Christ sit on
the throne and help him
until he is beaten. He does
not grow spiritually - he
needs to go to the Bible
each day. He should be Off
the milk and on the meat. He
has accepted Jesus in his
heart but is not ready to turn
his problems over to him.
Third, the victorious person.
He has gotten off the milk
and is eating the meat. He is
growing spiritually and
turns over his problems to
Jesus. He knows that God
never promised him a rose
garden. Jesus sends us out
as sheep among wolves. The
victorious person will still
have trials and tribulations
but he will have peace and
joy. He knows that Christ
will pick him up if he falls,
and Christ does pick us up
everyday. He prays about
everything, tells God his
needs and thanks Him for
His answers, he praises God
and rejoices under any
circumstances and he
witnesses to others. That is
the joy of being a Christian,
of putting on the meat of the
Word and trying to live
according to the will of
Christ. God’s peace is far
more wonderful than the
human mind can un
derstand. Be a Victorious
Person - put Christ on the
throne.
