Page 8-B Letter To The Herald Editor I read your comments in the June 11, 1981, issue of The Chowan Herald in which you attempted to discredit the services provided the residents of the Albemarle counties by the Albemarle Hospital located in Pasquotank County. You based your comments on Duke Endowment statistics for the period October 1, 1980, through September 30, 1981. Since September 1, 1981, is three months away, you must have been using figures for some other period of times. Dates should have been October 1, 1979 and Sep tember 30, 1980 edition. The Albemarle Hospital Waste Disposal Approved SANFORD - North Carolina state environmen tal officials approved SCA Services, Inc., to dispose of 3,000 gallons of liquid creosote and contaminated dirt along Highway 87 near here. By Tuesday afternoon (June 16) all 46 dump truck loads of contaminated earth had been removed to Pinewood, S. C. SCA was called late Friday. This was the second time in recent weeks that SCA was called on to clean up potentially hazardous waste. According to Terry Dover, eastern area supervisor for the Solid and Hazardous Waste Management Branch of the N. C. Department of Human Resources, SCA’s Pinewood site is the only approved hazardous waste disposal area in the region. There is no facility to take hazardous waste in North Carolina. Creosote, a refined coal tar product used as a wood preservative, leaked from the vent of an overturned tractor trailer truck on June 11. The truck, owned by Timber Trucking Company, Inc., of Ripley, W. Va., pulled onto a side road for repairs and turned over. Cleanup was initially under the direction of David Kelly of the Governor’s State Emergency Response Team (SERT), and he directed moving some of the saturated soil to the Lee County sanitary landfill until SCA could be called in. Lee County Public Works Director Larry Thomas said that the ‘ water mains directly under the spill had accumulated some of the El Capitan, guardian of the entrance to Yosemite Valley, is the largest visible granite rock in the world. It shoots 3700 feet up from the floor of the valley. THREE REASONS lor buying your Money ——" Merkel Certificates Irom , j, our Association, which no broker can match. / t. For the first eight 'months of the hospital’s fiscal year beginning on October 1, 1980, occupancy increased 12 per cent over the same period last year. As you know, the Albemarle Hospital is the Regional Hospital serving ChoWan, Dare, Perquimans, Camden, Currituck, Pasquotank, and other counties. Since we now have a number of sub-specialists, many patients of the Albemarle Region come to creosote. Water samples taken by the department indicated the phenol level in the water was about 2,000 parts per billion, considered a substantial amount. City officials are still considering the removal of 220 feet of pipe for cleanup. SCA, one of the nation’s leading hazardous and solid waste treatment and disposal firms, has applied for permits to construct a hazardous waste detoxification and recovery facility in Charlotte Regional sales manager Jim Marshall said the Charlotte facility will help with such spills. “Once our facility is built in Charlotte, cleanups such as these will be less traumatic for all parties involved. They will be less expensive and much easier to coordinate when treatment is available in North Carolina,” he said. The Herald Kitchen Continued From Page 1-B about 3 minutes. Serve at once. Divide 2 cups fresh raspberries, washed and drained among the salads. Serves 4. the Albemarle Hospital for treatment that required travel to Duke and Chapel Hill just a few years ago. A 50-bed addition with enlarged ancillary depart ments costing over $6.5- million opened just two years ago. This fine facility has made it possible to recruit an outstanding group of physicians, The Albemarle Hospital is now spending about one-half million dollars to add a CAT scanner so as to provide better diagnostic services for the people of the Albemarle which will eliminate the necessity for travel to Norfolk, Green ville, or other places for that service. I think you will agree that Pasquotank County could not provide such a well equipped and staffed Hospital without support of the residents of the other Albemarle counties. I am pleased that when a patient needs the services of the Albemarle Hospital, there is a well equipped room and bed available. I certainly agree with your comments relative to the importance of good management and com munity lay support for a good hospital operation. I think the fine job of the Hospital Administrator, Bob Jeffries, the dedicated services of the trustees, and the work of the Hospital Auxiliary and other lay people have had a tremendous influence on the operation of the Albemarle Hospital. You are certainly correct in saying that Duke En dowment figures don’t lie, but sometimes people use figures in away to create the wrong impression.
