If you don’t want to stand
over a hot stove and fry
chicken, there are other
appetizing ways to make
chicken a highlight of your
outdoor dining in addition to
the traditional fried
chicken. For instance, easy
to-eat drumsticks take on an
interesting new taste in
“Cheesy Crispy Chicken”.
The chicken will cook in the
oven while you’re preparing
the rest of the picnic lunch
and it is delicious served
either hot or cold.
Good nutrition is more
important than ever in
summer when outdoor
activities increase. Chicken
provides the complete
protein needed daily to keep
active bodies functioning at
their best. And it is low in
calories and fat content... a
bonus for those who like to
keep trim and fit.
When packing chicken for
a picnic, the National
Broiler Council advises
cooling it in the refrigerator
rather than at room tem
perature. If you aren’t
traveling far and will eat
within one hour, put the
chicken in a plastic con
tainer or wrap it in foil. For
longer periods, it is best to
pack the chicken in an in
sulated container or ice
chest until you are ready to
serve it.

The House bill’s $136-billion
authorization level is $26.4-

Final approval of the
Military Authorization bill
came after seven days of
debate on many issues,
including the MX Missle.
The House approved an
amendment requiring that
before funds may be ex

must determine exactly
what type of basing mode is

be given the opportunity to

several other votes, the
House supported

Meanwhile, the House
Ways and Means Committee
continued to work on a tax
reform bill. Unlike
President Reagan's plan
which contains a 25 per cent
three year tax cut, the
House Ways and Means
Committee version
presently contains a two
year, 15 per cent cut. The
Ways and Means Com
mitttee proposal would
leave the issue of a third
year tax cut for Congress to
decide next year. The
Republican tax cut package
includes an across-the
board cut in the tax rate,
while the Committee
proposal would target more
tax relief to those who earn
between $15,000 and $50,000
and less for those who earn
more than $50,000.
The Committee has also
included several reforms in
the estate and gift tax which
will greatly benefit family
owned businesses and
farms. There is great
concern that the current
estate tax eats up too much
of the estate of a farmer who
dies leaving a family farm
of a market value of, say
$200,000. Because of in
flation, the value of the
equipment on this farm
alone may be worth that
much, apd, with an estate
tax of around S3O per cent
there have been many cases
in which the family has had
to sell the farm just to pay
the estate taxes. The
Committee has devised a
proposal which will increase
the exemption for estate
taxes to $600,000 and has
raised the credit against the
unified estate and gift tax to
$192,800. This will exempt 99
per cent of all estates from
the tax.
The Committee has also
proposed a reduction in the
estate tax rates. The
Committee has proposed
this rate be reduced from a
maximum of 70 per cent to
50 per cent. The tax package
developed by the Committee
ilso increases the annual
gift tax exclusion from S3OOO
