Members indicated their
support for some local cost
sharing for construction of
deep-draft projects but
emphasized that a
significant federal con
tribution should remain
because ports have both
national as well as local
benefits.
Congressman Trible
acknowledged that this
position is at variance with
the Administration’s
recommendation that
dredging be financed totally
by local interests which
could be recovered by user
fees.
Carl E. Bagge, President
of the National Coal
Association, and Willem G.
Daniels, Director of the
North American Delegation
for the Association
Technique de L’importation
Chardonniere outlined
prospects for expected
growth of U.S. steam coal
exports, and pointed out that
increasingly, ocean-going
coal transportation will be
by vessels of up to 150,000
dead weight tons. These
ships cannot be ac
commodated by American
ports if they are not dredged
to channels of 50-55 feet.
