Thursday, August 13, 1981 Pests In Local Corn Crops By Murray L. Goodwin Agr. Ext. Agt. tHigh population of corn it worms have been found our area this year on :om. Thus, we can probably Bxpect high population in the soybean and cotton Adds. Also due to the ap larent earliness of the third generation caterpillars in soybeans and the large acreage of double-crop soybeans, we may have some September infestation i>y the fourth generation caterpillars in late planted soybeans. Problems in spraying soybeans: We continue to have a considerable yield loss to com earworms. Problems associated with soybean yield loss are as follows: 1. Treating fields that do not need it. 2. Not treating fields that do need it. 3. Discovering high earworm populations when caterpillars are large and have done lots of damage (late detection). 4. Waiting too long to spray (unavailable custom applicator or other reasons). 5. Use of too low in secticide rate on high populations. 6. Poor aerial application (mainly in small fields and or during very hot periods). If small caterpillars are discovered you have 3-4 days period to get the in secticide on the soybeans and not have severe damage. However, if large caterpillars are found, spraying should be done as soon as possible to avoid the I real damage. I The answer to the I problem is check your fields I often this time of year. You I will get better control if you I use ground equipment. Os I course we assume that you I are going to do a good job of | applying the insecticide I with ground equipment I (cover the vines .well). We I also realize that for some I fields the use of ground I equipment is impractical I where the vines are rank I and fallen down. Materials: I Recommended material ■ are Sevin, Lamnate, ■ Mudrin, or Orthene. Treat ■ when earworm numbers I exceed two per row foot as I determined by scouting. ■ Scout soybeans when August a&mff/fce} SALE </ 3 to V 2 OFF | On All Summer I Merchandise Tarkington’s Jerome H. Use 3 gallons water by air. Do not feed or graze hay when Orthene is used. Watermelon variety: We are harvesting our watermelon variety test. We think we have four new varieties that you might want to try on a small scale: Mirage, Madera, Sunshade and Dixie Lee. We will give a description of these varieties in future article including yield. Lesser cornstalk borer: Lesser Cornstalk Borer caused substantial injury to peanuts in Bertie County last year and some damage in Chowan County. This was because it was an extremely dry year and this is the time you have damage from Lesser cornstalk borer. Borer damage generally occurs to pegging plants and there are two broad types of damage. One is caused by the small larvae that feed in the vegetative buds and flower axils, on stems at the ground level, on leaves touching the soil, and on leafy debris under the plants. The second type of damage is caused by the larvae feeding on the pods and pegs and this is the most destructive damage. The larvae feed only a short time in the flower and then move to or below the soil surface to feed. The larvae often construct tubes of silken webbing, sand particles, and excrement. A description of the larvae is the head slightly bilobed, flattened and dark brown. Body pale yellow to yellowish green, posterior portion of each segment bright red to reddish brown on dorsum. These areas are joined by faint stripes, some distance apart, of the same color giving the larva a longitudinally striped as well as transversely banded appearance. You should start checking your fields now for Lesser Cornstalk Borer. Look for dead or wilting lateral branches on the peanut plant. When you see the wilting lateral lift it up and look for the silken webbing (tags). Where the webbing is attached you will find a hole in the stem. Tear the stem open and there is a good chance you will find the borer or a hollowed out stem. Following are the chemicals for control of Lesser Cornstalk Borer: Dyfonate 10G; Azordin 5 WM; Lorsban 4E and Lorsban 15G. Treat only when damage is seen. Soybean Crop DNA Research North Carolina’s next generation of farmers may be growing superior high yield soybean crops from plants cloned in recom binant DNA research at N. C. State University. Dr. Jerome Miksche, head of the NCSU Depart ment of Botany, says the research is directed at gaining greater quality and production, a more uniform fill of the seed pods and more uniform harvesting by either speeding or slowing the plants’ aging process. The recombinant DNA research involves altering the plants’ DNA - the life molecule which dictates the characteristics of all living things. Miksche says that by studying the soybean DNA, more can be learned about how it influences the plants’ production and aging processes. “We believe senescence (aging) is a normal developmental process programmed by genetics and we’re interested in identifying DNA sequences which remain effective in the later stages of a plant’s growth cycle,” he ex plained. Those sequences that are still regulating growth late in the soybean’s cycle are considered by Miksche to be crucial to regulating seed production and to the aging process. According to Miksche tte first step has been to locate these genes which are among hundreds of thousands in the DNA. “To do this we’re using enzymes to cut up pieces of soybean DNA in older and younger plants and then joining them with plasmid DNA,” he said. He explained that plasmid DNA is a “small circle-like DNA fragment found in bacteria.” The plasmid DNA containing the soybean DNA is then returned to the bacterium where it is reproduced, or cloned, many times. “We make a lot of a given gene type,” he said, “and then this is tagged with a radioactive isotope so that we can identify it.” The soybean DNA is then matched in soybean molecules, comparing younger and older DNA sequences. “Like sequences of DNA always attract,” Miksche explained. “When the cloned DNA, believed to effect the aging process, begins to match with sequences of soybean DNA, we’ll have identified gene systems which could regulate the aging process in other soybean lines. The research is basic, Miksche says. The recombinant DNA techniques used, can be used to transfer specific qualities from one plant to another. The transferred genes might serve to in crease a given amount of a specific protein or oil ~ the two most important products for which soybeans are grown. “This technique augments normal successful plant breeding programs,” he added. “I see it as another tool for plant im provement.” Miksche’s research is being supported by the U. S. Department of Agriculture Science and Education Administration. “The transfer of DNA from one plant line to another will be a difficult task,” he said, “but one that, if successful, could revolutionize present plant improvement methods."
