(COA Photo) Letter To The Herald Editor First, I would like to take this opportunity to thank my many friends and sup porters for their help and guidance while I served as Parks & Recreation Director in Edenton during the past six years. I have - enjoyed immensely working for and with the citizens of Edenton and Chowan County -for these folks are truely some of the finest that I have ever served. Unfortunately, though, I have had to leave my position. Being only human, I could not accept the continued interference in the operation of my department by the Mayor of Edenton. This interference grew most intense after the departure of our City Manager of many years, Bill Gardner. The Mayor began not only using his office to try to influence my administrative decisions within the Parks & Recreation Department, but even began dictating which umpires I could hire and fire. I was also pressured about changing a recreation ordinance concerning faoility rental which-the „ HMyoruJuTOsalf watched, passed only months earlier at his own council meeting. Reluctantly, I then made the decision to submit my resignation with the Town of Edenton, as I could no longer effectively operate my department under the prevailing restrictive conditions. But as though my years of service to the community meant nothing to the mayor, while I was out of town he then pushed a decision to force me into leaving my job a month before my planned resignation. These are only a few of the many incidences which have influenced my recent decision, but I shall not dwell on the others as they are merely water under the bridge now. However, I did want my many friends, colleagues, and the citizens of Edenton and Chowan County to know my reasons for leaving, and to know also Chowan County Board Os Elections HAS APPOINTED THE FOLLOWING ELECTION OFFICIALS: EAST EDENTOM. .......Mrs. Andrcv Vhitsoni RftjiflLrsr Nra. I have certainly had my eyes opened lately to the unfortunate consequences of political interference, and only hope that Edenton and the department director who follows me gain insight from what has happened. Although I regret having to leave, I can at least guarantee that while I served the citizens of this area the department operated with utmost in tegrity and honesty. I feel that I have gained im Around The Farms By Murray L. Goodwin Agri. Ext. Agt. We were on vacation last week and missed most of the rain. Monday we rode around parts of the county and went into peanut and soybean fields. We observed more stem rot in peanuts than we did worms on soybeans or peanuts. With uJJae .heavy- suspect that stem rot is in most fields. The chemicals to use for stem rot are Terraclor or Vitavax. Our last word, continue checking your soybeans for worms and your peanuts for worms and stem rot. Apply chemicals when there are two worms per foot of row in soybeans and four worms per foot of row for peanuts. To check for worms, put a white piece of cloth between rows and shake the plants over the cloth. Shaking each row over the white cloth will give distance twice the length of your piece of cloth. Watermelon variety test We have finished har vesting our cantaloupe and watermelon variety test. We think our watermelon tests had varieties in them that have promise of meeting the needs of Chowan County vegetable farmers. We will discuss the new varieties that we think have some Page 7-A measurable reward in thafcf have never compromised my ideals of service to the community, regardless of the pressures I was forced to operate under. Dixie Lee had the highest yield in the Winborne test and third highest in- the Pippins test. This melon is attractive on the outside and inside. Dixie Lee has a narrow rind compared with other varieties. Average? weight in Winborne test was 20.6 pounds and 21.8 in ..Pippins .test. Mirage has color about like Crimson Sweet but grows oblong like Jubilee. Yield was highest in Pippins test and second higest in Winborne test. This year it was an excellent eating watermelon. Average weight in Pippins test was 20.8 pounds and 27.9 in Winborne test. Madera, a new Asgrow Hybrid, looks like Crimson Sweet. It is an excellent eating melon. Yield was lower than Crimson Sweet. In Pippins test it came up poorly and grew off slowly. Sugar Lee did much better than last year. It is a light green melon with dark green streaks. It looks like Dixie Lee. This melon had weakness for environmental materials. A leftover baked pota to can be rebaked by dipping in water and placing in a 350 degree oven for about 20 minutes.
