Carleen Paige Goodwin assumed her position on August 19, according to Supt. Robert Clary. Clary commented, “In our evaluation process, we have 30 qualities’’ which are considered. He said Miss Goodwin “was rated above average or superior by every one of her referen ces.” Margaret Lewis, principal at Johnson School in Rocky Mount, said the coach “exemplifies those qualities which characterize an outstanding teacher.” John R. Wesleyan — -* . ■■—— - - ■ SECTION B Hospital Begins Expansion Project Chowan Hospital, Inc., filed notice on Sept. 14 of intent to incur a capital expenditure for the relocation of four intensive care beds from the first floor to a projected location on the second floor. The project is scheduled for completion in August. 1983, and is estimated to cost $374,389. This project is part of an overall expansion of the hospital which includes the addition of 10 beds and ancillary facilities. The project proposal has been submitted to the Certificate of Need Section, Division of Facility Ser District Court Is Held The following cases were heard in Cliowan Countv. District Court on September 8 by Judge J. Richard Parker. Phillip Samuel Richard son was found guilty of an improper muffler and given a $25 fine and cost of court. The case was appealed. Roy L. Lassiter was found guilty of nonsupport of his children and given a 90 day suspended sentence, cost of “recommended without reservation” Miss Goodwin to the school board. Clary said he was im pressed by her “coaching philosophy” which is to develop character in the players. He quoted from her written statement, “Win ning is the objective but my players have won if they have developed respect for their school, their op ponents, for me, and most of all respect for themselves.” Since 1978, Miss Goodwin has been a physical education instructor in the Rocky Mount City Schools. She coached girls Eighth Grade basketball to a “perfect season” at Eld wards Junior High School and coached Ninth Grade girls’ softball at the same school. Record Set GREENVILLE Showing a modest but sustained increase, fall semester enrollment at East Carolina University has reached an all-time record of 13,264 students on cam pus, according to Registrar J. Gilvert Moore. The fall semester total was an increase of 99 over last year’s enrollment, Moore said. Figures do not include the University (evening) College, he said.
