N.C. 1 THE CHOWAN HERALD To Participate In Program In July Edenton-Chowan School was randomly selected as one of 24 systems in the state to serve as a pilot system for testing an evaluation instrument for professional school em ployees. The development of an evaluation instrument resulted from a mandate of the 1980 General Assembly requesting uniform stan dards and criteria for all professional school per sonnel. Only the instrument developed to appraise the performance of principals and teachers is being field tested during the 1981-82 school year. “The personnel evaluation system will be mandated in all school units next year.” Supt. John Dunn said, “and for all job classifications within a school system.” Principals and selected personnel from Edenton, along with those in Beaufort and Washington counties, are attending a four-day training workshop at the Northeast Regional Education Center in Williamston, September 14- 17. Conducted by staff members of the State Department of Public In struction, the workshop will offer intense training to school personnel in Ob servation Skills, Conference Skills and Performance Appraisal Techniques needed to complete the personnel evaluation in strument. According to Supt John Dunn, "this will be an in volved process." However, the superintendent feels that the state is fortunate to have Edenton-Chowan as par ticipants because of its background and experience. “Our system has been a leader in personnel evaluations for the past six years," Dr. Dunn said, “so the evaluation process should not be that much different, but only more indepth and involved.” Last year teachers at White Oak School were involved in the appraisal which went into the making of the evaluation instrument being field-tested this year. Dr. Dunn emphasized that personnel evaluation is not an attempt to “catch somebody off base" but is a genuine and sincere effort to improve educational op portunities for children “The purpose of our par ticipation this year,” he continued, "is to provide leadership for the state in the development of a uniform personnel evaluation system that will help to produce quality education in our entire State" Church Os God Homecoming Homecoming will be observed Sunday at the Church of God. 9(W Johnston Street.
