Page 10-B Edmisten Leads Fight Atty. Gen. Rufus L. Ed misten says that court or ders issued against two California - based firms are “just the beginning” of a crackdown on frauds against North Carolina businesses. “We are going to make it unprofitable for these scams to continue,” Edmisten said about lawsuits filed against General Office Systems, accused of misrepresenting itself and its office supplies in telephone solicitations and against Checkwriters Insurance, accused of mailing service contract applications that resemble invoices for payment due. Allegations made in the state’s suit against General Office Systems resulted in a court order prohibiting the firm from: —Misrepresenting prices and brands of office supplies it is selling. —Overshipping orders. —Billing for merchandise not ordered in writing by the buyer. —Misrepresenting itself as any corporation other than General Office Systems, Inc. or claiming to be the usual supplier of the business it contacts in telephone sales of office supplies. Checkwriter Insurance, under a separate court order, is prohibited from mailing any materials into North Carolina which simulate or resemble in voices unless they are legitimate bills for goods or services requested in writing by buyers. “We’re going all out to stop these misleading telephone sales of sup posedly bargain office supplies and we’re going all out to top these phony in voices for goods or services ” U gj Complete Selection AjA T^ r Os Name Brand Dependable Auto & Truck Parts Albemarle Tire & N. According to consumer protection officials in Ed misten’s office, fake in voicing scams and high pressure selling of office supplies over the telephone are nationwide problems which have been overly difficult to control for many years. ‘‘Every state in the country is plagued with these insidious, well organized peddlers who randomly and in discriminanently go after both small and large businesses or professional firms,” Edmisten said. “Once we find out who they are and what they’re doing, we can put a stop to their activities. Edmisten, calling for information from the general public, said that he wants “anyone who has been duped by these con artists to tell my consumer protection office about it. I’m serious about this crack down on frauds against businesses and if I have to get my message across through the courts, that’s what I’ll do.” Recently, Edmisten met with business and trade association representatives to pool information and to set up strategies for, Edmisten said, “getting them out of North Carolina and keeping them out.” Before painting windows, remove hard-to-get dirt from corners with an old paint brush and soapy water. Home Ec. Ext. Agt. Buying goods and services on time is practically away of life these days. But when you do buy items on credit or the installment plan, keep this in mind - when you sign on the dotted line, you’ve committed yourself to a legal agreement. What happens if you default? Well, the creditor has a right to the secured property. And if you refuse to turn it over to him, he must obtain a court order to repossess it. The law provides that repossessed property may be sold to satisfy your debt. Under the law you must be notified when and where the property will be sold, so you may bid on it or be ensured that it’s being sold for a fair price. If the property is sold for less than the balance of your debt, you may still be liable for the difference. If the sale results in an excess amount, you are entitled to that That popular and delicious melon, the cantaloupe, gets its name from the village of Cantalupo, Italy, where it was first grown in Europe. excess. While you should never sell, hide or give away secured property, you don’t have to give it up volun tarily. If you have a good reason not to pay, you may refuse to return the item and consult an attorney. This will force the creditor to go to court, where you’ll have a chance to tell your side of the story. Now let’s talk briefly about two other items: Can you go to jail if you can't pay?
