Agent The Peanut Field Day at Lewiston had several im portant people to agriculture in attendance. Rep. Charles Rose, Frank McGill, peanut specialist from Georgia; Com missioner of Agriculture Jim Graham; Dean Edward Legates of the School of Agriculture and Life Sciences at N. C. State University; Dr. Durward Bateman, Director of Research Station; and B. E. Marks, manager, Peanut Growers Cooperative Marketing Association. Congressman Rose said congressmen from peanut states are well organized in their effort to get the peanut portion of the Farm Bill through Congress. He said the Reagan administration will support the Rose Bill concerning peanuts. Rose also said that tobacco and peanut forces are in step. B. E. Marks said about 75 per cent of Virginia and Carolina peanuts were contracted. For peanuts not contracted he thought S6OO per ton was a good possibility. Marks predicted a good yield but not a bumper crop. Gene Sullivan, new peanut specialist, talked about disease in peanuts. He warned peanut farmers not to panic when they see scattered diseased peanut plants. The damaged plants may be around 1 per cent. Gene reminded the peanut farmers that they have lost part of the peanut market during the past year due to the shortage of peanuts. To win back this portion of the market, farmers must market good quality peanuts. Frank McGill from Georgia told how the Farm Bill was formed. He said all parts of the peanut industry had a part in drawing up the bill. McGill said that it is very important that the allotment for peanuts stay as they have been in the past. Dr. Jack Bailey reportgl on efforts to predict the time to treat peanuts for leafspot. He said that for 1981 peanuts treated four times had just as good leafspot control as peanuts treated six times. Bailey is trying to devise a method for telling far mers when to spray. Similar information for controlling leaf diseases in cantaloupes and watermelons would be interesting. Dr. Bailey pointed out that Letter To The Herald Editor We wish to extend our appreciation for the newspaper article on our recent “Kids Krusade” here at First Assembly. The community response was very good which was due in part to your splendid cooperation to this article you placed in The Chowan Herald. Thank you for . your continuing interest and support. Sincerely yours, Norm Gloeckler Pastor Helpful Hints ZIPPER “ZIP" A little extra care will keep the “zip" in your zippers. Make sure zippers are dosed before washing or drycleaning a garment, advises Judieth Mock, extension dothing specialist at North Carolina State University. When pressing, keep the zipper closed and bring the iron just to the edge. Never place a hot iron on plastic track zippers. Use a commercial zipper lubricant or a bar of soap to lubricate zippers that stick. GRILLED TURKEY If your family enjoys turkey cooked on an outdoor covered grill, try these suggestions from Rachel Kinlaw, extension food specialist. North Carolina State University. For a hickory-smoked flavor, sprinkle a half cup of dampened hickory chips over the coals during the last half hour of cooking. Or, for a bit of flair, brush the turkey with a favorite barbecue sauce during the last half hour of cooking. This will give the turkey added flavor and gloss. three factors influence rate of leafspot growth: daytime temperature, moisture, and temperature at night. He said cool nights had inhibited growth of fungus recently. Irrigation of peanuts has increased yield 750 pounds an acre from 1973-79 at Lewiston. Frank McGill privately said that state peanut yield averages in Georgia had not gone up while percentage of peanut farmers irrigating had increased from 10 to 60 per cent. This was probably due to extreme dry years since irrigation had become widespread in Georgia. Dr. Tom Stalker told of his work to combine disease resistance found in wild peanuts in South America with commercial varieties and tines. Dr. John Wynn discussed his peanut breeding work. He told about a new line that has resistance to Black Root Rot and Southern Stem Rot. He also discussed peanut diseases and pH. Dr. Beute said that the pH range desirable for control of stem rot was different from that needed to control black root rot. Dr. Campbell related that earlier planted peanuts have less trouble with in sects. Byrum Farms has some rank cotton on the home farm.
