Thursday, September 24, 1981 Solar Home Showing ■ By Paige L. Underwood Perquimans Home Eco. Ec. Ext. Agt. The solar home is new to ) (host of us around Hertford, but with the rising cost of energy (heating and cooling homes)-people are starting to look and think more seriously about using solar energy, and why not? Ricky and Carolyn Trueblood have selected a solar home constructed by Nathan Hurdle, on Artie i Street, Hertford. The Perquimans County Extension Service and the Farmers Home Ad ministration will team togeth Sunday to present this Solar Home to the public from 2-5 o’clock P. M. The solar home can be built virtually anywhere. Windows are featured on the south since the sun provides its greatest amount of heat directly to the house from the south. During the winter days, half of the sunlight hitting the windows goes directly into the rooms. This is called direct gain. If you have sat next to a south facing window in the dead of winter, you know how warm Undeveloped Resources Continued From Page 2-B Other current studies say that, in addition to its oil and natural gas potential resources, the United States also has: - At least 250-billion tons of recoverable coal reser ves, containing the energy equivalent of about 1-trillion barrels of oil. That coal represents more than three times the amount of energy in the nation’s recoverable oil and gas resources combined. Some 600-billion barrels of relatively high grade shale oil, exceeding the total reserves of crude »iMn the entire free world. : -- Tar sands containing more energy that current U. S. proved reserves of £rude oil. Almost 700,000 tons of Recoverable reserves ~p7~ uranium in its' concerifFert&T iform -- enough to sustain the •nuclear power industry well Hnto the 21st Century. 3 -- A wide range of energy sources, including solar and •geothermal power, wind, : tides, biomass conversion •and others. : Taken together, these •studies suggest that, with •intelligent development and •continued conservation iefforts, the nation can •strengthen its energy •position and cut its still rheavy dependence on oil ;from insecure foreign •sources. 112 CHANNEL I CAPABILITY! : ' i ALL VH F/UHF PLUS 42 CABLE ] | CHANNELS, WITHOUT CONVERTER! j [ (EXCEPT SCRAMBLED PROGRAMS) ! Solar heat capitalized on this common fact by placing several large windows in all the major rooms, all facing warm south. At each south window there is a heat storage wall called a Trombette Wall. This wall holds some of the solar heat until night. It takes about 4-6 hours for the sun’s heat to travel through the wall, from the outside face to the inside of the room. So, even though the sun may set at 4 P. M., heat will radiate from the Trombette (brick wall) to the rooms for another 4-6 hours. ' Carolina Review Continued From Page 2-B considerably as well. All of these changes, of course, don’t necessarily suggest that the session will last longer than the five day “initially” slated. But some legislators have hinted that the session might be longer. CLOSE...Anyone listening or watching Capitol Hill in Washington last Thursday would have questioned Sen. Jesse Helms prior assurances that the tobacco support program was relatively safe. The abolishment of peanut acreage allotments in the Senate because of a break down in the longtime farm - state coalition cast a giant shadow over the upcoming tobacco program vote. In an afternoon statement before the tobacco vote, Sen. Helms was not nearly as confident as in previous weeks. But, somehow, the senator and other tobacco state colleagues were able to reconstruct the farm-state coalition in time to keep the support program intact-this time. SOMETHING MORE ...Maybe there is something more to the resignation of East Carolina University...chancellor, Dr.' Thomas B. foewer. j Brewer came under heavy “'attack from 1 the school’s Board of trustees when it was revealed that the chancellor was a preliminary condidate for the presidency of West Virginia University. The board thought he should have notified them. After his support at the school eroded, Brewer resigned. If the resignation and attendant pressure wasn’t “something more,” does the ECU Board want only someone that no one else wants? Brewer did not get the job with West Virginia.
