But we cannot furnish the house and restore it to show the seventeenth-century life style without aid from other . people.” Mrs. Walter Spaeth of Elizabeth City has been named to lead a statewide drive to secure members and endowments for the work. Mrs. Spaeth was recently elected second vice president general of the National Society of the Colonial Dames, 17th Century. She is a member of the George Durant Chapter of the Colonial Dames, 17th Century, the Chapter which was named for Perquimans’ County’s pioneer settler, noted for buying land here in 1661. Mrs. Spaeth brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Perquimans Restoration drive with her previous service as state membership chairman of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She has also held many local and state DAR offices. “I hope to tie my interest and contacts as a Colonial Dame to the Newbold-White House since a 17th Century house* and is of special interest W the Colonial Dames, 17th Century. It will be a pleasure to join all of those who have worked so hard to fulfill their hopes for the Newbold-White House. We understand that furniture and furnishings are very important if we are to show the life-style of the seventeenth century,” Mrs. Spaeth concluded. The Perquimans County membership campaign is being conducted as a project of the Hertford Business and Professional Women’s Club. “We must have strong local support if we are to operate this historic site,” Eure says, “We cannot expect state and national support if local people are not interested in showing this fine restoration to visitors. We must complete our site manager - caretaker’s residence in order to properly care for and present the Newbold-White House to visitors, and we hope that our Perquimans citizens will lead in joining in the work of the J tw rwvWAN HERALD Association”. Robert L. Stevenson, vice president, j&Boples Bank & Trust 'Compqny, has been asked to headV “Committee of One Hunp-ed” citizens it the area and stated who will pledge support for three years during the crucial period when this site is emerging as an important part of our heritage. The house is the only remaining meeting {dace of North Carolina’s Proprietary government which began in 1663. Bonnie D. White, president of the Hertford 8.P.W., will serve as coordinator for the three phase drive which begins October 15 and closes on December 15, “We hope that everyone will respond to our invitation to join which will be sent out by mail,” Mrs.. White says. “We must join adjacent counties in promoting our history not only as an educational part of our lives, but as an income producing industry. We have many old and interesting homes and buildings in Perquimans, and they should be .presented as an economic asset rather than a liability. Tourism is a clean industry and very rewarding when handled right.” “But we must all woik together if we are to be successful in this promotion”, Mrs. White stated.
