Thursday, October 8. 1981 Dunn Explains New Procedures Using transparencies and overhead projector, School superintendent John Dunn explained to Edenton - Chowan School Board members Monday night an involved and time consuming procedure which principals and teachers will be going through this year. The procedure arose from Edenton • Chowan’s selection as one of twenty four systems in the state to Held test a Professional Personnel Evaluation instrument, as mandated by the 1980 General Assembly, before it is put into use statewide, next year, for all school personnel. The School Board members agreed by common consent to the procedure outlined by the Superintendent. “The process is predicted on the idea of mutual benefits”, Dunn explained, “and it is to our distinct advantage to have the unique opportunity to participate.” Principals and teachers will have many conferences about what, how and if they are achieving their educational objectives for students. These conferences will take place before and after informal and formal observations of teachers by the principals. The same process will be repeated between the Superintendent and the principals, as the principals are also evaluated. The whole process is an attempt to foster honesty aid candor regarding 'Professionalism between these staff members. The Board approved the Superintendent’s request that students be dismissed at 1:30 P. M. on October 12. This is to enable teachers to meet at 2:30 P. M. with a state department consultant, who will provide the orientation for the Performance Appraisal procedure. As N.C.A.E. president, Gil Burroughs requested that member teachers be al lowed to leave school about twenty-five minutes early, but after students had left school, to .attend the professional organization’s monthly meetings. The Board took no action, since this item had not been added as an item of business on the agenda, as expected by Burroughs. Chairman Jordan told Burroughs that after further investigation, the Board would take the matter under advisement and inform him of their action. Burroughs requested to be informed of the meeting at which the issue would be discussed. The Board approved principal John Guard’s request to give Winston Dail and Jackie Jennings, social studies teachers at Chowan, permission to take students on an October 30-31 overnight educational tour of Washington, D. C. Because reduction in program funds necessitated the reduction of some employees working hours, School Board members approved a revised Policy Concerning Part Time Employees and Temporary Employees Benefits. The essence of the revision was to reduce from 40 to 30 the number of hours worked to allow those persons continued hospitalization and retirement benefits. As recommended due to medical reasons, the Board accepted the resignation of Mrs. Carolina Banks, 4th grade teacher at White Oak School, and approved a one year leave of absence for Mrs. Berrie Williams, LD teacher at Chowan Junior High. Sixty-two substitutes, who have met all requirements, were also approved for the 1981-82 school year. In a report to Board members, it was explained that four students, not having the necessary Services Held For Mrs. Moore ELIZABETH CITY - Mrs. Marion Shackleford Moore, 48, of 1223 Crawford Street, died Sunday in Albemarle Hospital. She was a native of Norfolk and the wife of J. Murray Moore. She was a Baptist. Other survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Mildred Godfrey, Mrs. Rose Byrum, and Miss Mary Ann Moore of Elizabeth City and Mrs. Peggy White of Weeksville; a brother, Clarence P. Shackleford of Edenton; and three grandchildren. A funeral was held Tuesday at 2 P. M. in Westlawn Memorial Cemetery by Rev. Glenn B. Greenway. Twiford Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. THE CHOWAN HERALD immunizations required by State Law, are up for suspension during October. The suspension dates will be effective 30 days after parents and students received previously sent letters. Students who complete the necessary immunizations, or show that they have started correcting the deficiencies before the deadline, will not be suspended. Reaffirming its com mitment to State level support for school construction and capital outlay, the Board endorsed the State Board of Education’s position supporting a S6OO million dollar Statewide bond issue for schools and-or a one cent sales tax increase as a method for financing school construction. Other reports included several meetings which school board members have coming up in the next month. Annual Revival Plans Are Set Bethany United Methodist Church, 3 miles north of Belvidere, N.
