Page 6-B Sam Ervin To Be Guest Speaker At Cultural Week Observance An address by former U.S. Sen. Sam J. Ervin of Morganton and awards to two state historic sites will be highlights of the 1981 Culture Week observance, November 17-21. The 68th gathering of members of 11 statewide cultural organizations will feature annual meetings and various programs in art, history, literature and music, as well as the presentation of some 25 prestigious awards during the annual assemblage known as “Culture Week in North Carolina.” Headquarters for the week - long observance will be the Holiday Inn in downtown Raleigh. Sen. Ervin will be the featured speaker at the November 20 awards dinner of the Literary and Historical Society. Title of his presentation at the 8 P.M. meeting at the Wo man’sClubof Raleigh is “Hu mor, Wise and Otherwise.” Following the awards presentations, Sen. Ervin has been a dues-paying member of the Literary and Historical Association, North Carolina’s oldest statewide cultural organization, since 1922. Two awards will be presented to state historic sites from the American Association for State and Local History during Friday’s Literary and Historical Association meet. The Tobacco History Corp., support group for Duke Homestead State Historic Site, and the N. C. Division of Archives and History, will receive an award of merit for the development of Duke Homestead in Durham. The Junior League of Raleigh will receive a certificate of commendation for “the preservation and interpretation of the history of North Carolina’s capital city,” which included a film on the Capitol. Among other special guests at the week’s meetings are Rep. Mary Seymour of Guilford County, who will speak at the N. C. Federation of Music Clubs’ annual meeting Tuesday; Daniel Tara, U. S. Ambassador at Large for Cultural Affairs, who will address Wednesday’s Art Society meeting at the Morehead House in Chapel Hill (adjacent to the Planetarium); and Aurthur Aiegler, president, Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation who will be guest speaker for the Historic Preservation Society’s 8 P. M. awards dinner on Thursday. Also during the Friday schedule of the Literary and Historical Association, Sam Regan, editor, Southern Pines “Pilot,” will offer tributes to several North Carolina literary figures who have passed away recently, including Guy Owen, Paul Green, Hugh Lefler and Thad Stem. Among the two dozen awards to be presented and organizations presenting than during the week are Hinda Honigman Composer’s Cup, N. C. Federation of Music Clubs; THE CHOWAN HERALD N. C. Museums Councils annual award; Historic •Preservation Society of North Carolina, Stedman Incentive Grant, Awards of Merit and the Camion Cup. Also, N. C. Literary and Historical Association: N.C. Connor awards, American Food Distributed To Needy RALEIGH Nearly 1- million people daily benefited from the food distribution program conducted by the N. C. Department of Agriculture during the fiscal year ending July 31. According to state Agriculture Commissioner Jim Graham, over 68- million pounds of U. S. Department of Agriculture donated commodities valued at $34-million were distributed to 2,339 public schools and agencies during the period. Also low income Indian Association of University Women Award for Juvenile Literature, Roanoke- Chowan Poetry Award, Sir Walter Award for Fiction, Mayflower Society Award; Christopher Crittenden Memorial Award. Also N. C. Poetry Society: Frank C. Brown-Arthur Palmer Hudson Awards, Cratis D. Williams prize and W. Amos Abrams prize and student essay contest; N.C. Society of County and Local Historians: families of the Eastern Cherokee Tribe living on or near the reservation in western North Carolina received foods according to Jay P. Davis, Jr., director of the department’s Food Distribution Division. Foods purchased by the USDA are returned to the states for distribution to the needy. Agencies receiving the commodities include schools, the summer feeding program, charitable institution, the supplemental health and needy program, and the summer camp program.
