Interested groups and organizations are en couraged to contact Col. Charles Speed, Executive Director of Operation Lifesaver for North Carolina, to arrange a very interesting presentation, col. Handicapped Week Observance Set The period October 11 through 17, 1981, has been officially proclaimed “National Handicapped Awareness Week” in North Carolina by Governor James B. Hunt, Jr. The proclamation calls upon all North Carolinians “to join in eliminating environmental and at titudinal barriers which our disabled neighbors face so they may participate fully in all aspects of community life.” The objectives of the week’s activities, according to Sue Roberts, Director of Public Information and Advocacy for the Easter Seal Society of North Carolina, Inc., is to increase public understanding of the needs and rights of people with disabilities. “Awareness of the environmental and at titudinal barriers which confront persons with disabilities is the key step in bringing about changes so that they can have full access to our society, maximum independence and the opportunity to develop and use their full capabilities,” Roberts said. The National Easter Seal Society and its network of affiliates throughout the nation have organized and sponsored Awareness Week as a public education project since 1975. “Over the years, other organizations have joined forces with Easter Seals in this effort, so the Awareness Week now has become increasingly a community-wide cam paign,” she pointed out. “For example, one interesting activity scheduled is “Access Sunday”, a nationwide effort by churches of all denominations to remind their congregations that ‘unity’ includes both the disabled and the able, to study and act upon ■- J - HERITAGE W commercial - residential farms NEW LISTINGS ALBEMARLE SOUND Waterfront, delightful two bedroom cottage on Surfside Dr. with spacious great room and deck overlooking the sound. These are the findings according to Mrs. Helen E. Hollowell, who recently attended a meeting on “Care of the Aging” at the State Democratic Party headquarters in Raleigh. The median age of the state’s population increased from 26.4 years in 1970 to 29.6 in 1960, according to those figures. Specifically, about one-half of the state’s residents were older than 29.6 on April 1,1980, and half were younger. Higher survival rates, lower fertility rates and the increasing age of the baby boom generation all contribute to the “aging” of North Carolina's population. Nationally, the median age was 30 in 1980, up by two years over the 1970 median of 28. Florida had the oldest median age at 34.7 years, and Utah’s 24.2 was the youngest. In North Carolina, the number of children under 15 years old decreased by almost six percentage points in proportion to the total population from 1970 to 1980. Young people aged 20 to 34 gained more than four percentage points in its share of the state total during that 10-year period. The baby boom generation is now in the 20-34 age group. effective in strengthening public understanding of the still unmet needs and potential contribution of some 35 million people with disabilities,” Roberts added. “Easter Seals is proud of its leadership role in this Senior citizens, 65 and over, made up 10.25 per cent of the total in 1980, compared with only 8.11 per cent in 1970. Each five-year age group, except those under 20 and in the range of 40 to 54, increased by more than 20 per cent since 1970. The 1980 census race data are still not final and strict, comparisons between the 1970 and 1980 censuses are not possible because of changes in definitions. In 1980,75.8 per cent of the state’s population was white, compared with 76.8 per cent in 1970. The 1980 census showed 22.4 per cent of the population as black, compared with 22.2 per cent in 1970. The total for other races increased from 1.0 per cent in 1970 to 1.8 per cent in 1980. The male to female ratio in the state changed only slightly, with the proportion of men decreasing from 48.96 per cent in 1970 to 48.55 per cent in 1980. IMPORTANT NEWS FOR BACKACHE SUFFERERS! On Wednesday at 8:30 A. M. in Manteo’s Town Hall, members of America’s 400th Anniversay Committee (AFHAC) will hold an information and orientation session on plans for “Elizabeth II” a vessell which will play an important part in the 1984-87 celebration of the quadricentennial of the first English colonies in the New World. “Elizabeth II” will be built and berthed in Manteo. but AFHAC has not yet decided who will construct it. Stanley Potter, the naval architect finishing plans for the ship, will join AFHAC members Charles Wade and David Stick for the meeting, which is open to any boatbuilder interested in the project. “We’ve been hearing about “Elizabeth II” for a long time now,” says Horace Whitfield, a Dare County boatbuilder and founder of “Friends of Elizabeth," a support group designed to encourage local interest in the ship. “This meeting gives us our best chance to find out exactly what the project involves, what kinds of skills it will take to build it and how much we’ll be able to offer the backers of the ship. It’s a good chance for all the local boatbuilders to come forward and let AFHAC know just what we can do for them, too.”
