THE CHOWAN HERALD New Officers Are Elected FtALEIGH - The N. C. Agricultural Foundation elected a new slate of officers at a business session following the state* kick-off luncheon for the “2 Nickels for Know-How” Program. The luncheon was held at the N. C. State University Faculty Club October 14. Charles Pinkney Francis of Waynesville, a major apple grower and agricultural leader in Western North Carolina was elected president of the foundation. He succeeds M. Scott Whitford of Grantsboro, who has served a two-year term. Other officers elected were Milton Vaughan of Murfreesboro, first vice president and Mrs. J. A. Boyd of Henderson, second vice president. Elected to four-year terms on the executive committee were: J. Harvey Lilley, Route 3, Hubert; Gordon P. Miller of Wilkesboro; and David R. (Bobby) Yates, Route 1, Banner Elk. Treasurer George Worsley, who is vice chancellor for finance and business at NCSU, reported that the foundation raised $835,000 in the fiscal year ending August 31. (Money raised by the foundation, which includes income from the Nickels for Know-How Program, is used to support research, scholarships and extension programs at NCSU.) Before the business session, the group heard Dean J. E. Legates of the NCSU School of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Mrs. Isabelle M. Fletcher, vice chairman of the state 2 Nickels for Know-How Referendum Committee, and Wake County farmer Billy Sherron, voice their support for increasing the Nickels for Know-How assessment from one to two nickels for each ton of seed and fertilizer sold. Each stressed ways in which the program benefits agricultural research and ultimately farmers and consumers in North Carolina. Gov. James B. Hunt, Jr., principal speaker at the luncheon, said the program is critical to agricultural progress in the state and promised his total support in the coming referendum to increase the assessment. He warned the agricultural leaders assembled from across the state that because the program had been successful in the past, not to assume it would easily pass without communication on the local level to the farm voters. Fertilizers and seed users will vote on the increase in a November 24 referendum. Bank Official Is Reappointed CharlesF. (Chip) Merrill, president of Bancshares of North Carolina Inc., and chief executive officer of Bank of North Carolina in Raleigh, has been reappointed banking chairman of the N. C. Savings Bonds Committee. The reappointment is announced today by Bland W. Worley, Volunteer State Chairman for Savings Bonds. Merrill has also been reappointed by the American Bankers Association as its N. C. State Savings Bonds Coordinator. The N. C. Savings Bonds Committee coordinates statewide activities promoting the sale of U. S. Savings Bonds. It is made up of leaders in banking, business, government* industry, labor, media, and the professions. “As a representative of the American Bankers Association and as a member of the North Carolina Savings Bonds Committee,” Merrill stated, “I welcome the opportunity to work with so many men and women from all walks of life in the important task of promoting a greater degree of financial security to our fellow citizens.” Page 7-B
