Page 8-B The Carolina Review Only Peanuts?? ... Back in early August, when the tobacco and peanut support programs were having serious problems in the U. S. Senate, Gov. Jim Hunt suggested that if the programs fell, then the blame should rest in the conservative lap of Republican Sen. Jesse Helms. Some observers admitted then that the Hunt statement was an early political gambit in the governor’s probable U. S. Senate race against Helms in 1984. Other observers said Hunt’s statement was valid since Helms was the elected guardian of North Carolina interests in the U. S. Senate. Further, Helms was the powerful chairman of the Senate Agricultural Committee. Either way, Helms was genuinely worried about the program's continued support and the political ramifications at home if the programs failed. Somehow the programs emerged from the Senate relatively unscathed and Helms breathed a sigh of relief. Helms then pointed out that the opponents in the Senate had been mostly Democrats and that the governor might in the future try to work with him in keeping tobacco supports instead of finding someone to blame in advance. With that, the tobacco and peanut supports advanced to the Democrat-controlled House. Last week, the House voted overwhelmingly to dismantle the almost half century old peanut support program - setting the stage for this week’s debate and vote on the tobacco support system. Os course, regardless of the tobacco vote this week, the support issue won’t be solved for a while yet. A conference committee of the House and Senate must still meet to smooth out the already apparent differences between the two bodies. It is still possible that the tobacco and peanut programs will emerge alive. But in Raleigh, a more interesting though not more important aspect was Continued On Page 10-B Completes Training Navy Seaman Recruit James B. Phelps, son of James M. and Belver Phelps of Creswell, has completed recruit training at the Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, 111. During the eight-week training cycle, trainees studied general military subjects designed to prepare them for further academic and on-the-job training in one of the Navy’s 85 basic occupational fields. Included in their studies were seamanship, close order drill. Naval history and first aid. Personnel who complete this course of instruction are eligible for three hours of college credit in Physical Education and Hygiene. He joined the Navy in July. Carnival Slated The Rocky Hock Community Center will hold a Halloween Carnival October 30, beginning at 5:00 P.M. There will be a country store, spook house, hayride, train ride, fishing pond, auction, pie walk, and many other activities, games and goodies, appealing to all ages. There will also be a costume parade, with judging in age groups from birth to 80 ...Hot dogs, hamburgers, drinks, soup, and desserts of all kinds will be offered.
