Money raised from ticket sales, in addition to a Z. Smith Reynolds community incentive grant, will be needed to fulfill the loca 1 chapter’s obligation for bringing the N. C. Symphony Membership: Excellent Gift The Chowan County Chapter of The North Carolina Symphony has the perfect answer to everyone’s Christmas shopping quandries. For that special business friend, boss, secretary, relative or friend on your list, a membership in the North Carolina Symphony will be an enriching and delightful experience, the remem brance of which will last the whole year through. The North Carolina Symphony Chamber Or chestra, conducted by Jim Ogle, Associate Conductor with the Symphony for the past four years, will be in concert January 28, 1982 at Ernest A. Swain Elemen tary School auditorium. Memberships purchased now will arrive in plenty of time to enclose in gift cards for Christmas. A highlight for local citizenry to the Symphony’s arrival in Edenton, for the first time in over ten years, is that the popular Edenton Choral Society and the John A. Holmes High School Concert Choir will perform with the nationally ac claimed group. Adding to the exictement of having professional and local artists perform for the community’s pleasure is the Chowan Art Council’s in tention to have a reception immediately following the evening concert. At this time everyone will have a once in a life time op portunity, perhaps, to meet and socialize informally with the performing musicians, who have graciously accepted the invitation to attend. Not only will the gift membership provide tremendous satisfaction to the receiver, as well as the giver, but also it will help meet the quota of providing a “free” educational con cert for 900 4th through Bth graders in Edenton-Chowan Schools. The Chamber Orchestra will be per forming for these students on the mordfhg of January 28. The simple musical gift of a membership in the North Carolina Symphony is guaranteed to have long reaching effects on all who receive it. Membership fees are: $5.50 for adults; $3.50 for Senior Citizens and students 16 and over; and $2.00 for students 15 and under. For further in formation call Terry THE CHOWAN HERALD Wackelin at 482-2792, Sally Blount at 482-4954 or Mary Rhea Gardner a 482-4436. In presenting Mrs. Cherry, Boyce described her as an “excellent choice, being a dedicated and hard working teacher truly interested in her students.” Mrs. Cherry, an English instructor at Holmes for the past nine years, displayed her motivating enthusiasm as she enlightened members on her philosophy of Education and shared her comprehensive personal and professional notebook, which will be used when she represents this system in competition during January for Regional Teacher of the Year. On behalf of the Board, chairman Eugene Jordan recognized Mrs. Cherry’s recent honor with an engraved pewter cup from the members. Symphony is being spon sored in Edenton by the Chowan County Chapter of the North Carolina Sym- to teachers, Jordan said he was “proud to be awarding this cup to the best of the best, which is just one of the reasons why people in the areas recognize Edenton- Chowan Schools as being above the ordinary school system.” Maxine Brown, new Director of Instruction, brought the Board up to date on the system’s proposals and time table for ac creditation into the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. At present Walker, Swain, Chowan and Holmes schools are fully ac credited and will undergo a five-year interim study in 1982. White Oak, the Alternative School and the school system as a whole are presently undergoing the self-study process to receive accreditation by 1984. All schools are scheduled to be on the same accreditation self-study schedule by 1986. Employed recently by the School Board to analyze its policies in relation to risks and to anticipate the best way of increasing the system’s insurance coverage at a cheaper price, Kurt Ficklin, consultant phony, which was formed this summer through Edenton- Chowan Schools Community Education Program. with Ficklin Insurance Associates, presented the members with developed plans for bid specifications to meet requirements for the system. All bids will go to local agencies, which will have 45 days to respond before bid contracts for insurance are accepted. Upon recommendation by the Superintendent and “in light of current interest shown about teacher sup plements, the Board ap proved the informational release of salaries and supplements, above the State allotted amounts, of certified personnel to Gil Burroughs, requesting NCAE president. “The information to be released will be listed by position and amounts not by names”, according to Superintendent Dunn. The Board agreed to release the information with the stipulation that “Burroughs will be held responsible for proper use of this information.” To protect individual school employees from ex ploitation and to preserve the privacy of individuals, it is the Board’s general policy not to release salary in- Continued On Page 7-A €Reffc TyCer downtownk*r edenton SPECIAL BUYS!
