Page 6-A Smoke Alarms Can Save Lives RALEIGH ln 1960, 203 North Carolinians were killed in house fires. Many of these deaths would have been prevented if the houses had been equipped with smoke detectors. Burley B. Mitchell, Jr., Secretary of the N. C. Department of Crime Control and Public Safety, said today, "Behind statistics such as these is the personal tragedy of families being rended by loss of loved ones. “Much of this loss is un necessary. That is what makes it so tragic. At least half of those 203 persons who died in fires during 1900 would have been saved by the installation of an inexpensive smoke detector in their homes,” Mitchell said. Mitchell noted that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has started a year long smoke detector campaign and that North Carolina is adding its voice to that effort. According to FEMA, half of the . nation's homes currently have smoke detectors. Those who need them the most, however-the elderly, the handicapped and minorities--are under represented in that half. With the Christmas season fast approaching, Mitchell suggest that smoke detectors would be a thoughtful-and life-saving-gift for relative, friend or loved one. “People are funny,” Mitchell observed. “A FEMA survey reveals that cost is not the reason people don’t have smoke detec tors. Those who don’t have them don’t think they are important.” Ned Perry, Chief of the Cary Fire Department and President of the N. C. Association of Fire Chiefs, added his voice to Mit chell’s, saying, “Smoke detectors have proven to be one of the more effective methods of reducing deaths from fire. “The fire chiefs of North Carolina encourage all citizens to install a smoke detector in their homjs,” he said. “Christmas is a good time to remind them that smoke detectors are important. Smoke detectors save lives,” Mitchell said. “Give a gift of life-give a smoke detec tor.” Christmas Safety Tips Continued From Page 3-A products, UL tests indoor and outdoor Christmas tree lights, artificial trees and electrical decorations for a variety of safety features. “Many fires are caused by damaged light strings, overloaded circuits and improper use of decorations. At UL, we try to make these products as safe as possible, but con sumers have to do their part too,” says Seelbach. The National Fire Data Center reports ap proximately 82,000 fires killed or injured more than three thousand people and caused about 340 million dollars in property damage last December. Seelbach says consumers can avoid fires if they use simple precautions. “A spark or a hot wire can ignite a dried out tree. Check each string of lights carefully. If you find a break in the wiring, frayed in sulatin, a broken bulb or a defective plug, don’t use it; replace the string,” Seelbach says. Overloading a circuit with too many lights also can cause a fire. “Read manufacturer’s instruction carefully and don’t use more than the recommended number of lights on one circuit,” says Seelbach. To help consumers with Christmas safety, UL engineers have compiled a “Christmas Safety Checklist.” Seelbach suggests consumers use the checklist to improve safety holiday time, ‘“nie checklist covers information on decorating the house, ar tificial and real trees, and other safety tips for the holidays. The checklist is a poster featuring Santa and his elves and is a good education tool for children also.” Two tabteipoons of grated Parmesan cheese addad to a quarter cup of malted butter, makes a terrific sauce for fish or CEm SEASONS t«c* »i aw— xvwSMd —w » wquiwaw b» i—mi swsmo <& wf u»A «ktehiaihii%irv \ ( P II ® j if STOKELY CREAM STYLE OR WHOLE KERNEL STOKELY HONEY POD Sweet Peas 2. ; 79 C J EXTRALEANSPEC , ALTRIMCOUNTRVFABM ASSORTED A&P QUALITY HEAVY WESTERN GRAIN FED BEEF _ _ 8 lbs. or jq BONE-IN StMk rs ?))
