The Chowan Herald Page 9-A ECU Ambassadors Head Impressive Public Relations Efforts GREENVILLE Moving into the second year of its existence, a select group of more than 100 East Carolina University student volun teers called the ECU Am bassadors is achieving an impressive record of service in public relations functions and fund-raising for the university. Chowan County students listed as ECU Ambassadors are: Nancy Denise Phthisic, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. McKay Phthisic, Jr., and Charles Smith, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Smith. Smith is currently president of the Ambassadors. The idea of the organization is to project the image of the university through its students, and the ECU Ambassadors come in frequent contact with the university’s externa) publics, alumni, supporters and other constituencies. “The ECU Ambassadors is a unique organization, combining service with fun,” says student Nelson Jarvis of Ayden. Part of the fun, says immediate past president Alice Martin of Cary, is “becoming aware that community leaders really care about us.” “We have found that our contacts with people outside the campus have been one of the most satisfying aspects yei our work,” Miss Martin THE GIFT II TO SPREAD fp®Ji warmth mGmnr AROUND! > - I—M.' t People remember your g*i when It * a Kero-Sun" Portable Heater. During the first year the ECU Ambassadors took on a high degree of visibility at university-related public functions. They wore gold colored blazers with name tags while engaged in service projects such as: - conducting tours of the campus for prospective students and other groups. - spending more than 1,000 hours of time con ducting telephone fund raising campaigns, con tacting ECU alumni and raising more than $65,000 in gifts and pledges. -- engaging in fund raising activities for academic programs, alumni projects, and special events. - serving as hostesses ~ and hosts at receptions and dinners, such as the black tie Chancellor’s Society recognition dinner; at alumni “open house,” alumni festivities and charitable and other fund raising events. As a means of strengthening campus community ties, the ECUAmbassafors have volunteered many hours to local community projects. They led tours through ment of Agriculture. The study was required by Congress in the Soil and Water Resources Con servation Act of 1977 (RCA), according to Coy A. Garrett, Soil Conservation Service (SCS) State Conservationist in Raleigh. Specifically, the RCA study showed that: --One-third of America’s cropland is eroding faster than the soil can rebuild itself through natural processes. Unless correc tive actions are taken, the acreage of this excessively eroding land will increase further. -Floods threaten human life, cropland and other property, livestock, and crops in upstream water sheds. Greater damage is Greenville’s historic and architecturally interesting buildings during Heritage Tour and assisted at receptions for visitors and distinguished guests sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and the local likely in the future. -Depletion of ground water threatens the con tinuation of irrigated agriculture in extensive areas of the West. -Deterioration of water quality may limit the use of water for irrigation,, municipal and industrial supply, fish and wildlife habitat, and other purposes. Nativity Scene On Display Center Hill United Methodist at Center HiH again has the Nativity scene set up on the church lawn. The scene shows life figures of Joseph, Mary and the Babe in the manger with the three wise men bearing gifts for the new born King. In the back ground there are shepherds watching the flock of sheep. This Nativity scene is set up each year by Emmett P. Jones who makes the scene more alive each year with special lighting to create the old but still new story of the birth of Jesus many years ago in the City of Bethlehem. On Christmas Eve, Mrs. Margaret Smithson and her class of young adults will light the way to the manger with Luminaries which will burn all night. The members of the church invite the public to come and enjoy this night with them. Our wish for everyone is that God’s richest blessings be yours this holiday season and the New Year.
