Page 4-B CO A Students To Perform "Drama students at College of The Albemarle have merged their talents with several of Elizabeth City’s “resident” actors to produce “The Last Meeting of The Knights of The White Magnolia” as the first production of the new year by the COA Satyrs. The play will be presented aj,8:15 P. M. on January 23 apd 24 at J. C. Sawyer School. It is a segment from “The Texas Trilogy,” by the late Preston Jones. Jones summed up “White Magnolia,” which examines the final chapter of a dying southern social order, with a description of Bradleyville - “a small, dead, West Texas town in the middle of a big, dead, West Texas prairie. The new highway has bypassed it and, now, the world is trying to.” Lucy Vaughan, COA drama instructor and director, explained that the play illustrates what hap pens when a small group of lovable losers find them selves unable to accept social change, or to hang their shortcomings on other groups.“lt is at once hilarious and tragic,” she said. .“Comic-tragedy is my favorite form of theatre,” the director said. “While you’re wondering whether to laugh or cry, you find that you’re doing both.” Board To Meet Friday : RALEIGH The next Meeting of the North Carolina Board of Tran sportation will be held Friday, January 15, in Raleigh. -The meeting will begin at ill A. M . in the board room of tße Highway Building, located on the corner of Wilmington Street and New Bern Avenue. In the meeting, the board will be requested to amend previous action and in crease funding on a project in Charlotte to allow for the purchase of 27 buses, four vans and related equipment for* the handicapped and elderly. State funding to be requested for the purchase totals $100,535. That amount would be matched with an equal amount of local funding and $804,280 in federal funds. State funding already approved by the board tqta[led $380,138. Local funding was the same and federal funds amounted to $3,041,104. If the board approved the increased funding, total monies available for the project will b5"54,806,730. A project to make im provements to the bus poking lot in High Point and one to prepare a transportation development plan for Mecklenburg County will also be presented to the board. mm- Drivers Log High Mileage “Weyerhaeuser’s North Carolina Region over-the road truck fleet drivers logged almost 1.7-million rifles in 1981 without a single road accident, injury of moving violation for the eptire year -a perfect driving record. Carlyle Horner has returned to the stage, following a long illness. “We couldn’t have done the play without him,” Vaughan said. “Furthermore, his performance is stunning.” Advance tickets can be purchased at Oxena Newsstand. Prices are $3. for adults, and $2 for students under 19 years of age. Tickets at the box office will cost $3.50 and $2.50. COA students, faculty, and staff will be admitted with identification cards. Other public tran sportation projects which will be considered include demonstration projects in Craven County and Winston- Salem. One project will enable the Craven County Coordinated Transportation System to determine the feasibility of converting its fleet to propane fuel as a cost reduction measure. The other project will establish a van loaner program that will provide short term leases for em ployers and interested in dividuals in Winston-Salem who wish a trial period to participate in commuter vanpools without making a permanent commitment. State funding being requested is $78,480. Local matching funds amount to $8,720. As matter of normal procedure, the Department of Transportation did not conduct a bid opening during the month of December; therefore, the board will not consider any highway improvement contracts in the upcoming meeting. The next bid opening for highway projects is scheduled for January 26. Wehrenberg John Wehrenberg of Washington is to join the Weyerhaeuser Real Estate Co. effective March 1 as project manager respon sible for development ac tivities and land sales in North Carolina and Virginia. He currently is North Coastal Zone manager for wood procurement for the North Carolina Region. Rountree Melvin Rountree of Hertford has been presented a service award for 15 years with the Weyerhaeuser Co.
