Page 4-B Parents Group Gets Grant The Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation, Inc. of Winston- Salem, North Carolina has recently granted Parents Anonymous of North Carolina, Inc. $20,000.00 for the continuance of this programs activities throughout North Carolina. Parents Anonymous, established on a concept of “self-help” and first in corporated in North Carolina in 1976, is a membership organization for abusive or potentially abusive parents. This organization has sought continuously to assist local communities in the development of Parents Anonymous chapters and other child abuse prevention and treatment resources. There are presently 23 Parents Anonyous chapters in North Carolina with the local chapter serving as the key element of both organizational structure and service delivery. In contrast to other treat ment modalities, local chapters are fully mnned by volunteer personnel - among which are a mental health or, allied health or allied health professional; a chapter support committee; and the members themselves. There is no paid staff and very little in the way of program overhead. When the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation, Inc. granted Parents An onymous the above stated grant, this organization was literally within days of insolvency. We now have the funds to continue our full operations until May, 1982. One of the reasons that this organization must depend on outside resources for financial assistance is that families in the program are never charged for service. It is a well known fact that family financial stresses are a contributory factor in many child abuse situations. It is felt that by charging for services, Parents Anonymous would be in creasing this stressor and preventing some families from getting the help they need. A Parents Anonymous chapter has been meeting weekly in Elizabeth City since 1980. Interested in dividuals may obtain more information on this local chapter by contacting Sharon Dvorak at 330-4559 or Paul Shales at 338-2167 ext. 47.
