Essay Winners
Are Recognized
American History Month
will be observed by the
Edenton Tea-Party Chapter
DAR at a luncheon meeting
at Boswell’s Restaurant on
February 10. The winners of
the American History Essay
Contest, which was held
recently, will be present to
read their essays to
members, parents and
friends.
The NSDAR designated
February as American
History Month in 1952 and,
as part of its observance, a
contest has been held each
year in grades 5,6, 7 and 8.
Children all across the
country are encouraged to
take part.
“A Famous American
Born in February” was
chosen as the theme for the
1982 contest, for this year
marks the 250 anniversary
of the birth of George
Washington. Research
helped the students discover
many other famous
Americans who were also
bom in February 1900 and
who had great influence on
American history.
The local winners in the
contest were Peter John
Mitchener, Benjamin Calvin
Hobbs, Robin Bass and
Margaret O’Leary.
All winners were students
of Mrs. Betty Bissette, who
is an instructor at Swain
Elementary School and also
Chowan High School.
