Page 6-B Gumie C. Hobbs Named Director WASHINGTON, D.C. - NTDRA has announced two appointments filling vacancies in the Association’s Retread and mm j Technical Services Division. Gurnie C. Hobbs has been named director, Retreading and Technical Services Division, and David V. Aldrich, assistant director for Technical Affairs. “We are pleased to an nounce these appointments at this time,” NTDRA executive vice president Philip P. Friedlander, Jr., said, “because it enables us to offer greater service to our members and the retreading industry as a whole, at a tihie when the motoring public’s in N.C. Features Solar Homes Eleven solar homes in 10 Western North Carolina counties were opened to the public the first two weekends in December through a joint state and private effort to encourage the use of residential solar energy systems. This group of homes was the first of eleven groups to be featured as part of North Carolina's “Governor’s Showcase Os Solar Homes,” a new project sponsored by the N. C. Alternative Energy Corporation and the State Energy Division. The project is designed specifically to promote solar homes and solar retrofits that are moderately priced and conventionally styled. Over 3,500 people visited the Western Carolina homes. Beginning in February, solar homes in the Piedmont and in Eastern North Carolina will also be shown on a region by-region basis. “By the end of 1982, this showcase project will give all the people of our state a chance to see first hand how cost-effective a solar in vestment can be,” said Gov. Jim Hunt. “Every one of our citizens should be able to visit several Showcase homes and see a variety of solar designs in less than a day’s drive.” Showcase open houses are scheduled by 10 county region. Within each region the houses will be open simultaneously for two consecutive weekends. It is hoped that at least one solar home can be featured in each of North Carolina’s one hundred counties. It’s a major step in NTDRA’s Crusade for Quality.” Hobbs, a native of Chowan County comes to NTDRA from the American Automobile Association (AAA) headquarters in Washington where he served as Director of Promotion. During his 24- year tenure at AAA, Hobbs resolved a number of communications problems and helped the association grow from 5-million to 21- million members, while also broadening the revenue base from collateral sources. His writings include “Advertising for AAA Clubs” and “A Logical Look at AAA Selling.” He wrote and produced three national training films which were used by nearly every AAA club in the United States and Canada. In addition, he planned and conducted the AAA’s international sales and management con ferences. Hobbs designed and wrote scores of sales promotion publications and advertising materials used by AAA to improve sales production and membership growth. be utilized in a home. Commandant Announced Secretary of Trans portation Drew Lewis has announced that President Reagan has nominated Vice Admiral James Steele Gracey to be the 17th Commandant of the U. S. Coast Guard. The nomination is being sent to the Senate for confirmation. The 54-year-old graduate of the Coast Guard Academy and the Harvard Business School succeeds Adm. John B. Hayes, who is retiring. A 32-year veteran of the Coast Guard, the new Commandant has served in assignments as varied as Commander of a LORAN (Long Range Aids to Navigation) transmitting station in an isolated Tlingit Indian village at Yakutat, Alaska, to Dangerous Cargo and Vessel Movements Officer at the Port of Boston.
